Second Visit - The Early Warning Station is having a massive refurbishment / upgrade, and the giant 'Golf Ball', a feature of the Northumbrian landscape for miles around, has been removed, and will be replaced shortly with a smaller version. Couldn't resist the opportunity to photograph the view from the TP with the 'Golf Ball' gone! The contractors staff are much more wary than the RAF personnel about giving us permission to enter (but did anyway). Although I had the dogs Rosie and Watson with me I didn't fancy pushing my luck with the security staff, so had to leave them in the car. Security did say if there is actual work going on they couldn't allow anyone on site. So you'll need to pick your moment if this is one you're planning to do in the coming weeks.

First Visit - We parked up on the minor road south of the TP and walked the mile or so up the gated road that leads north up to the RAF compound and the Early Warning Station. This was the first TP I've taken the girls and both dogs to. There are some impressive crags on the right with a natural sandstone archway as you get close to the top, O had a fine time scrambling around on these before we reached the gate and rang the bell and waited a minute or so before a very smartly uniformed, friendly and helpful RAF person let us in and escorted us through the compound to the TP. He seemed totally nonplussed that a family with two dogs would want to visit the TP but showed quite an interest in what we were doing. The views south are totally blocked by the Hulme Park wall (quite a feat of engineering in itself if you realise how long it is), and other views are slightly obscured by the various buildings and paraphanalia of the EWS compound, but that just serves to make this a pretty interesting TP in its own right.

Walked up the private road from the public road logging the Old Ace High geocache on the way up. As others have found the pillar is now located within the military compound. So on the basis of nothing ventured nothing gained I rang the door bell. Explained to the sargeant that I would, if possible, like to visit and touch the trig point. He was very helpful and oferred to take me to it where I was allowed to perform a GPS mark and take photos. Pillar is in good condition with original indented lettering plug. Escorted back to the gate and left expressing my appreciation. High score given for interesting location. There are no views.
