On pre-breakfast walk from nearby campsite. Pillar spotted easily as whole hedge looked to have been recently cut back but, to access field had to crawl under electric fence so ended up damp and muddy. Luckily the frisky cows were in the next field or it might not have been so easy to make my escape when they decided to give chase!

A mud- and bramble-fest from start to finish. Access from the E, where it was found between wire stock fences completely overgrown with bramble. Cut it out to reveal a pillar in good condition. Original cap in place, deeply indented lettering; all sight holes sealed. 360deg views, a little limited to N by hedgerow.

The pillar stands on the side of a field grazed by cattle on a low downland ridge to the north of Weymouth. The trig is protected by a dense growth of brambles and an electric fence. It has FB S6000 and the spider is plugged with a metal cap with what felt like deep lettering. My attempt to lean over for a closer look was rewarded with a mild shock to the groin from the fence. The other side of the trig is a stone wall, more brambles and another electric fence on the edge of the adjacent, empty field. A footpath from Broadwey runs adjacent to the fields’ southern boundary. Both fields are easily accessed and the cattle appeared to be almost oblivious to my presence. From the trig downland ridges can be seen to the north and west; Portland can be seen to the south and coastal cliffs can be seen in the distance to the east.
