A revisit for RHW and myself to help Colin Crawford find this trig with the help of Charlie Scott, Norman Wares and hinderance of Jonathan Chopper Woods.

Covered in moss. A cool sunny frosty morning made the route easier than normal. Generally a water logged route.

Parked on Broken Cross Coal Haulage site access road at NS848359. Took track along south of forest and up its westerly flank. A plastic "Danger" sign is wedged in cairn on wall at NS 84240 39203 - into wood here

Good luck finding this one. Thrashed around the plantation for half an hour, just about ready to give up when I stumbled across it. All this despite having a site plan courtesy of the opencast next door. Rebuilt the small cairn on the dry stone wall to the north-west as a marker for the next nutcase. Later became manager of the site during restoration but never revisited.

Standard approach from south and the followed Rob's instructions. Very tricky to access trig with 10 month old baby Fraser in papoose. Had to abandon carrier and carry him face down at ankle height to avoid pine needles.

Easy to find following Peregrinus directions. Parked as previous caller at security hut, guard's only concern was that I might disturb two deer with fauns resident in the field south west of the track. He was perfectly happy when shown my proposed route on the map.

Damaged pillar located in a tiny clearing in the midst of dense conifer plantation. The top has two badly chewed corners and the pillar itself is almost totally covered in moss. The sightholes are all obscured though the FB is readable. Cap present with sunken lettering. No views at all. Accessed by parking at the security hut for the Scottish Coal site after asking the security guard (to the south of the trig). Headed along the mapped dirt track until a stile is hit. Headed NE until the second mapped ride at 1:25k. Follow that ride SE-ish until the new edge of workings is hit then follow those S for about 40m. That should put you about 60m due E of the trig. I then just dead reckoned and pushed through the conifers and hit the trig dead-on first time. I just reversed the path to get back out again. Not easy! The expanded workings can be seen on Google Maps now.

Good job I had read the last log and took note of the directions, or I would never have found this, deeply hidden in the fast-growing conifers! Covered in moss, and the top is badly cracked. Original plug with slightly-indented letters. Sightholes obscured. No views from here at all. Glad to get back to the car!

2nd time lucky (tried in Feb this year). Top starting to crumble. Metal cap, shallow letters. In small clearing. 470m NE from track (160m NE from gate in wall): see 4 metal posts in wall, then small cairn on wall marks point of entry into plantation, go between rows of spruce, seems about 80m. Aerial photo on multimap suggests trig in danger from opencast mining (Scottish Coal) although I didn't find edge of workings.

NS843371, LR71 & 72. Visited to record FB number. HISTORY: Pillar completed 1st June 1949 costing 19.0s.3d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NS83/T7 in 1950. Levelled for height in 1962. Last maintained by the OS in August 1976. SITE VISIT: Trig pillar badly cracked around top, probably caused by frost. Spider retained original OS stamped font plug. Flush bracket faces west. Easy access from nearby mapped track, but needs to be searched for amongst young conifers. Located 2 miles south east of Lesmahagow. Photographed 4th June 1997, GRP.

Trig pillar & flush bracket. A bit of a search.
