(440) An easy find, thanks to the last visitor leaving this uncovered. Everthorpe Road is quite narrow, but there's enough of a 'pull-in', near the trig to allow parking.

Just like the nearby Berntsen I had no joy in locating the thing as the vegetation was just too much. Was looking in the right place but couldn't find the thing - I'll be back.

2" domed bolt in block, in depression covered in dead bracken. Paced 14m along road from mounting block, then 6.4m back from edge of road, spotted depression. Sketch dimension 5.6m from near end of old gate looks right. Dusk so didn't search for road nail.

A joint effort with Father Ted, and quickly successful, unlike the nearby Berntsen. He spotted the stud on the road's edge and measured the 6.4m (thanks, CJO!) at a right angle to the road and my screwdriver hit the block first time. We uncovered enough to get a clear view of the large bolt which was left exposed.

Another opportunity to get dirty! This was a relatively quick find even though it was buried. A careful look along the roadside revealed the nail and then with one of us either end of the tape measure we could measure the distance pretty accuratly meaning that the first prod with the long-handled screw driver struck concrete! The passing cars were still slowing down to see what two grown men were up to with a trowell and a paint scraper on a muddy verge probably thinking we were mad, or as we would say in the trade, 'a few pillars short of a survey'.

Serious amount of vegetation cover. The key to success here was finding the nail still in the road edge and my assistant crawling into the hedge to find the remains of the gate. In summary surface block is 6.40m from nail. 5.00m from a big stone crossing the culvert to the gateway. We positioned a 2inch fence post in the ground were the old gatepost should be. The mounting stone still exists 14m away. A mounting stone appears to be a stone step to help mount a horse.

North Cave bending over the surface block. The old gateway is the samll gap to the left and the pipenail is next to the tip of the grass shear.
