Pulled in at the lay-by just off the A36 and took the route across the field, climbing over the first fence beside the entrance to the large house. A couple of locals parked and chatting in the lay-by asked what I was up to but seemed happy when I told them I was looking for the pillar. The field was fairly muddy after recent rain, but at least the gate on the other side of the field was open, giving easy access to the farm track. The pillar is across the track in the opposite hedge, behind an old farm gate that is leaning against it. This may be difficult to spot in the summer once brambles and other foliage start creeping around the gate and pillar.

Parked in lay-by immediately east of road junction (old road) need to U turn into it from the main road. Followed route suggested by others over gate into field to west of house. Partly overlooked. Onto farm track at east end of field. No sign of pillar. Spent about ten minutes walking up and down peering into hedge. Attracted the interest of livestock who seemed to think I had brought their breakfast. After checking on here, position of gate on east side of lane was a clue. Eventually discovered smothered in dense brambles with a farm gate leant against it. Tricky job to remove particularly vicious brambles. Would have been a bit more thorough if it hadn’t been for livestock paying me too much attention and a farmer starting up his tractor in the nearby farmyard. Fairly good views towards the north.

I parked in the lane near the pillar, hoped over the gate, which drew the attention of a local, and made my way to the pillar. When I returned the local asked what I was doing. So I told her. She appeared relieved as there is a planning application for the field to be made into homes. Personally I think the pillar is safe (as it just falls outside of the field) but time will tell.

Friendly framer pointed us in the right direction, readily allowing access. He appears to be very security conscious and asked us to lock the steel clad gate on exit. He then caught up with us and suggested we leave via the field which exits into the lay-by with the gate towards the western end so that he could lock the gate. Pillar very well hidden in hedge on eastern side of track 3m north of gate exiting above mentioned field.

This is supposed to be in the hedge according to other loggers but we couldn't find it and were running out of time. I thought it might be in the field, but there were some extremely fierce looking horses (of which I'm not normally afraid) and a bull, so discretion being the better part of valour, we decided not to investigate further. Besides, there was the most appalling smell of rotting rubbish around, and I was beginning to feel a little queasy...
