Access from track directly west could be problematical as this is the access road to a busy working quarry. Used FP and track network from TL172428 (adjacent White Horse pub), turning south towards trig at second track junction @ TL177425, thereby avoiding quarry and its road

Walked from Broom but the pillar can be driven to directly from the B658 as the track is metalled and in good condition. Pillar is on a concrete plinth (soil eroded?). Plug intact. The adjacent fields are currently being turned into a huge new gravel quarry but according to the extraction permission this field will be spared (see

The trig is mounted quite high on a platform of rough cornered concrete. It looks like the platform was cut at some point to shrink the size of it. Trig is in good condition and is very stable. Entry to the field is great. In the Summer the trig is not visible through the bushes but I have been here before in Winter where you can see it through the hedgerow. You have to pass 'Race Base' cache which is always worth a visit *S*

Apart from some apparent soil erosion around the base, this trig is in as good a condition as any I've seen. No chips, cracks or 'tractor damage'. All it's metalwork is in place. The views are, well... ordinary with a high hedge to the north and flat(ish) farmland all around. Access is easy from the adjacent, single lane track.

Easy access, the pillar is hidden behind the short hedge lining the approach track. However it is easy to walk round, even at 3am on a frosty night! The only reason I rate this as slightly damaged is because of the exposed nature of the base. However, it is always possible that it was built like this... We'll never know.
