Should have been the highlight of our 200 mile round trip to the far North East - we drove past Dunnet Head at midday on our way to Duncansby Head in glorious weather, but during our time picking up a lot of rather anonymous roadside TPs between the two, the weather deteriorated to such an extent that this was almost a complete wash out. We sat in the car in the car park as rain lashed down for half an hour, and only when it had subsided into heavy drizzle did we venture up to the TP. What a shame.

Thick haar prevented any views around the trig, but I was able to drive right up to it as there was no-one about! As others have said it is a very odd summit with strange things protruding from the ground! Pillar in good condition with GPS plaque, ?metal/plastic plug, and green paint to FB which is flaking away. Summit viewpoint plaques told me all the things I should be able to see from here but all shrouded in the thick haar! Dinner in Thurso beckoned so I turned my fog lights back on and left.

This is my first visit here for 42 years and I have to say that it hasn't chnaged a great deal except for the carved stone sign telling you that this is the most northerly point. When I was last here it was a simple metal plate stuck in the ground! The pillar is painted white, with na plastic plug. W sighthole open, others closed. Concrete based exposed about 4" all round. Wonderful views to Orkney, Cape Wrath and the North West Highlands. They don't come any better!

I walked here along the road via Castletown after setting out from Sandra’s Hostel, Thurso in the morning. It was clear enough to see the whole north coast laid out to the west. Hoy and the rest of Orkney looked very inviting to the north also. I finished off the day by making it the rest of the way to Duncansby Head, after a brief call in at John o’Groats. One of my most memorable walking experiences to date.
