A revisit around sunset in the snow to get some good photos of this local trigpoint, and finally log it. I walked up from Mossley as usual, slightly further than from the back road but the most scenic way. Temperatures in the minus range, but superb views.

(2732) Parked on Lane Head Road as it widens slightly - I wasn't aware of the layby further up until after visiting. Then over the gate and up the empty field taking a straight line to the pillar. Visible from some distance away, its not until you reach the top of the ridge, that the views eastward suddenly appear. A bit of a 'wow' moment. Pillar looking quite smart thanks to its patriotic paint job. All metalwork present and correct. Pillar history: Built on the 14th of May 1940, at a cost of £4 2s 9d. Last maintained by the OS in February of 1980.

Parked on Stamford Street. Took the public right of way (PRoW) from there. Left the PRoW near a cross (known as the 'Mossley Cross') by climbing over a stile into the trig field. Then headed for the summit and the pillar. The Hartshead Pike Tower, which is an intersected station, can be seen from the pillar.

4/8 Fine N/S ridge, the great views were well worth the hot walk up the slope towards it. Saw again the tower in the distance in the S, which I later found out was called Hartshead Pike, though not marked on my OS map. On to The Rock.

Walked N from Hartshead Pike (luckily both are on the Tameside Trail), but I have a feeling I need to return to visit the Billy Goat pub - great name. Not familiar with this area. Using Greater Manchester Transport extensively to complete trails on Dark Peak map, makes life so easy, so I gift them todays trigs.

Levelled for height to Class 1 precision at tertiary standards in 1958. Last maintained by the OS in February 1980. SITE VISIT: Approached from northwest. Layby on east side of Lane Head Road at SD961031. Followed mapped RoW to top. Open grazing top. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains original OS centre cap with shallow engraved letters. Flush bracket faces SSW, compass measurement 193°. All sight holes open, innards filled with debris. Full 360° panoramic view. Part of a 24 trig stint around the northern outskirts of Manchester.

Metal plug [indented letters]. Private [owner unknown]. Not on Access Land [the true Brown Edge], but located on grassy knoll in pasture just above. Fortunately, there is a public footpath into the field with the trig in it, so access is pretty easy. From the road, take the RoW beside the Billy Goat pub.

Pleasant walk through meadowland starting at the roundabout at the end of Lees Road. Short, but a number of highlights: Hartshead Pike, the sudden view of Mossley in all its ... Mossleyness, the Cross, (OK - not sure about that), and a finish through wonderful bluebell wood. But! Another bloody golf course!!!

Good views in most directions, especially towards the east. Not far from the Mossley Cross, erected in 1994 with funding from all the christian church denominations in Mossley. No cars, on foot!

Original plug intact. Trig on a public path. Best views are to the east over Mossley and to Saddleworth's Chew Valley. Bagged on a walk from Park Bridge Heritage Centre via Hartshead Pike on what was the hottest day of the year so far.

It made an interesting triangular bike ride using the recommended horse route from Freizland via Bishop Park. Views poor because of the murky day - and the pylons - but the drop down into the gorge of Brookbottom (?)was impressive

Easy to get to. Over the sty next to the works enterance off the tarmac road, round to the left over anoher sty and up the hill and your there. sounds easy until you get back to the car and realise youve taken photos but not got the fb no so back again.combined this one with GCE962, from which you can see the trig point.

The Pillar the pillar with my bergan on the top, etrex hanging from its cord. GCE962 is offpicture top left.
