Parked just E of Casterton on Wandales Lane and followed the track past Langthwaite to Fellfoot Rd. Followed the meandering track to the large cairn on Brownthwaite Pike and then headed for the trig pillar. Followed wall down to Fell Rd and followed that all the way to Wandales Lane and back to the car

A circular walk from Casterton taking in this pillar. A sea of wild wall to wall moorland enfolds with the odd farm breaking the landscape. Returned via Bullpot and Barbon. I am not one for "chick flicks", but loved the movie "Where the Crawdads Sing". This pillar and its location is gifted to this wonderful film.

Nipped up bridleway from above Gale Garth after walk around Bullpot and Ease Gill. Continued from prominent bend to higher gate in newish fence and path of sorts leads to pillar. No rope but looks to have been recently whitewashed. Fine views in a lovely, quiet part of the Pennines.

Verge parking at SD 6567 8094. Followed the RoW round, then went off piste. One stock fence to negotiate. Pillar has no centre cap and is unplugged; RHS sight hole sealed, other 3 open. Extensive panoramic views. With Roger Templeman.

Took advantage of the fact it hasn't rained for a month, to have a lovely dry stroll from the Bullpot road up the side of the wall.Interesting undulating ground all around and fantastic summer evening sunshine views helped the score.

Good to see what the views could be like, until the downpour it's a beautiful wild view of moorland seas. Via Barbon and the dale, beautiful oaks and limes with sundew nearby.

First of three trigs on a 13 mile hike starting near Gale Garth and continuing from Brownthwaite to the new footbridge near Blindbeck Bridge then straight uphill to Castle Knott and Calf Top Trig before steep descent to Barbondale and back up the opposite slope to Crag Hill Trig via Hazle Gill Combe and Crag Side. Returned via Richard Man and Bullpot Farm. Good weather all day.

Pillar in good condition. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces SSE, ~162°. Vented through three sight holes, NE face plugged. Pillar bolt viewable but a plastic bottle has been dropped down the centre hole by an imbecile. Full 360° panoramic view includes Calf Top. More blurb to follow.

Walked up ROW from the NE of Gale Garth on the road to Bullpot. Followed track to gate in wall & then NW on wet grassy path to the trig & also the summit of Casterton Fell (Barbon Low Fell) just to the SE. Trig in good condition,good panoramic views. Visited the huge cairn on Brownthwaite on the return,an impressive structure.

Judging by what i saw later in the day the views must be pretty good but the skies were still leaden at this point. Not the high point of the hill which is presumably on the neighbouring lump.

The 1st of four trigs on an 18.5 mile walk starting above Gale Garth and continuing onto Calf Top and Holme Knott before returning via Crag Hill. Beautiful sunny day with a brisk wind. Ground was good underfoot after a few weeks of great weather.

Bagging Barbon Low Fell HuMP summit which is high point of this hill. Parked by sheep pens at double passing spot, then NW to summit visiting large cairn on the way. Sunshine and cloud but rained all the way back to car.

This Trig point is on the summit of Casterton fell not Brownthwaite pike,(see Wainwright's walks in Limestone country)in which he states "a quarter mile north east of Brownthwaite Pike the undulating top of Casterton fell rises to a grassy hillock which is surmounted by a triangulation column(s5344)and this is at an altitude of 1436 feet,marks the true summit of the fell".

Visited to record FB number. The pillar was completed in May 1949 costing £14.7s.0d. In 1950 this marker was computed for triangulation as secondary station SD47/5 in the Barrow-in-Furness block. Flush bracket S5344 was levelled for height in 1953. This trig point was last maintained by the OS in June 1976. I had this one on my lists as Casterton Fell for the many years before the OS official names became available through the public domain.
