HISTORY: Pillar completed 27th April 1948 costing £21.4s.6d. Computed as secondary triangulation station SE02/3 within the Rochdale block during 1948. Levelled for height in 1961. Last maintained by the OS is October 1979. SITE VISIT: Parked just beyond cattle grid where yellow road ends, SD754181. Followed mapped RoW (not continuous on ground) to NW of pillar then beeline climb to top. No red flags flying. Pillar in good condition but for old minor damage to top screed. Spider centre plugged with tar. Flush bracket faces SSE, ~149°. All four sight holes open, innards blocked with debris. 360° open outlook. Returned by what I thought was the same route but rejoined the other track at SD757180 - and that was on a clear day!

Strictly out of bounds on firing days, but publicly accessible at other times, when the paths across the moor are open. Google "Holcombe Moor Firing Programme" to access Bury Council's webpage before setting out for this one. Walk up from Crowthorn, past the little reservoir and up onto a vast, flat, featureless, boggy upland, beyond which lies prominent Bull Hill [thankfully providing firmer ground]. Poppy appropriately fixed to one hook at this time of year.
