Car park full so park on Lumb Carr Road. Steady climb up the path toward Peel Tower then out towards the trig….no MOD flags flying today so all good..a little boggy after all the rain but lovely clear skies and good views from trig.

Nice Bank Holiday weather so went up to Peel Monument because the tower was open. Fantastic views from the top. Then continued walk past the Pilgrims Cross and on to Bull Hill. Good views across the West Pennine Moors.

Parked just below peel tower and di a 5 mile circular to the trig. It was a bank holiday so no worries about getting shot on the rifle range. Started foggy but cleared up once we got to the trig, providing views of the surrounding moors and hills.

A nice trig in a field used by the military for firearms training. I bagged it on route to Peel Tower via a Pilgrims monument. It had a rather moving war memorial painting hanging on one side. A touching thoughtful gesture.

Parked at end of the road, past Crowthorn Resr.. Partially frozen ground allowed a direct route over peat hags. Just inside a MoD danger area, but no flags flying today. Pillar has a significant amount of top screed missing; cap gone, asphalt plug; RHS sight hole sealed, other 3 open. Extensive panorama.

Christmas trig - one of the "missing hills" around Manchester. Arrive to wintry greys with low cloud on Scout Moor and moving in from Winter and Cheshire plain, Pendle gleaming in the sun in the distance. Wonderful - back via Peel Tower as the cloud lifts for a beautiful blue sky - briefly!

From Crowthorn up the lane and followed indistinct ROW across marshy ground ( aimed for burnt out car then Flagpole ) to firm ground at base of hill to Trig which is situated on Moorland in a MOD Range, The Trig is in good condition with a tar filled Cap , 3 open sight holes and the FB faces 144, Extensive 360 views , returned same

HISTORY: Pillar completed 27th April 1948 costing £21.4s.6d. Computed as secondary triangulation station SE02/3 within the Rochdale block during 1948. Levelled for height in 1961. Last maintained by the OS is October 1979. SITE VISIT: Parked just beyond cattle grid where yellow road ends, SD754181. Followed mapped RoW (not continuous on ground) to NW of pillar then beeline climb to top. No red flags flying. Pillar in good condition but for old minor damage to top screed. Spider centre plugged with tar. Flush bracket faces SSE, ~149°. All four sight holes open, innards blocked with debris. 360° open outlook. Returned by what I thought was the same route but rejoined the other track at SD757180 - and that was on a clear day!

Parked at cattle grid end of Crowthorn Road.Ground not as wet as expected, on this lovely summer day,at last!Pillar has a course pebble dash effect to it, screed missing around on side of spider,tarmac piug & 3 sight holes open.Excellent 360° views today.On way down from pillar,passed a large memorial stone to the ancient pilgrim cross which once stood there.All in all a great circular walk.

Asphalt plug. Missing concrete from top has left spider partly exposed. On MOD firing range. Strictly out of bounds on firing days, but publicly accessible at other times, when the paths across the moor are open. Google "Holcombe Moor Firing Programme" to access Bury Council's webpage before setting out for this one. Walk up from Crowthorn, past the little reservoir and up onto a vast, flat, featureless, boggy upland, beyond which lies prominent Bull Hill [thankfully providing firmer ground]. Poppy appropriately fixed to one hook at this time of year.

The red flags were giving contradictory signs with one flying, one at half mast and the one near the trig not flying. I risked it and went to bag the trig and county top before heading over to the over nearby county top, some 1100m plod. Hot, hot, hot - the weather that is not the trig.

the first of three triangular shaped walks today on the moors north of Manchester all three taking in a trigpoint and ua top,from Crowthorn road,very wet underfoot, reasonable views.

Long drag upwards over the Firing Range - lucky us as there were no Red Flags flying today on the white flag poles! Brill 360 deg views all around on this clear day. Good Trig - slight damage on edges but who wouldn't be sat up there all these years.

vgc, asphalt plug. Grassy summit, ascended in the dark in passing, although no need for torch with all that spare sodium light. Top screed a bit tatty.

Been here many times over the years, first time logged, 200 yards from trig the heavens opened. Nowt new there then. Spotted a stone cut bench mark @ SD 77800 18837 on gatepost on way down.

Tarmac plug; top screed damaged; graffiti. Dull locality but distant views OK. If approached from NW, trig is approx 100yds inside the MOD Holcombe Moor training area. Invisible fence so advisable to check beforehand to determine non-firing days - 01204 882991
