A good day because I haven't met a soul on the fells. Win win. The last pillar of the day and 7/12. Further along the wall from this pillar is a memorial stone and cross for the 4 air crew who died on the 2.1.1945.The aircraft was being ferried from Seething in Norfolk to BAD2 at Warton near Preston, most of the passengers were a second aircrew who were going to fly another aircraft back to Seething. The crew (19) had become disorientated in low cloud and snow showers, they obtained a radio fix on Warton and the pilot turned onto the appropriate heading to get to Warton, after the accident it was determined that the fix was out by 20 miles, and while flying at just 1500ft the aircraft flew into the top of Burn Fell, slewed round demolishing a stone wall and bursting into flames. Memories/places are gifted today and I recall reaching this pillar from Dunsop Bridge. Despite lots of tree felling/damage etc I picked a perfect line off Burn Fell, which was exactly the same as my ascent route many years ago. Overnight camp at Dunsop Head.

Walked up a superb bridleway from the top of Wood House Lane up to Dunsop Head and then followed the wall round to the pillar. Warm in the shelter of the bridleway but a stiff east wind on the tops.Hazy views but it was still possible to pick out Pen-y-Ghent.An extra bonus was the plate number- 5000. Burn Fell was the scene of a WW2 air crash on Jan 2 1945.Four of the airmen are remembered on a stone at the foot of the fell. Amazingly 15 survived, thrown clear as the B-24 Liberator ripped itself open sliding along the fell.
