Short walk up from end of nearby lane - sunny but a fierce gale blowing. Subsequently nearly got blown over in St Ives, and that was nothing to do with just exiting the Golden Lion! Easy to find at this time of year. Wall to wall views of a very rough sea (plus great views of St Ives on the walk up). Centre and W s/hole open, otherwise vgc.

Couldn't find this 'un three years ago, probably due to expecting to find it nearer the top of the hill and the farm. Rather more luck this time round, with the assistance of the GPS and a few clues based on previous logs that said they'd had to wade through extensive dying bracken. On that basis, and having spotted its top from the path below, it was duly bagged. Kicked some of the encroaching ivy off it while I was there.

The pillar stands on the edge of a bracken and gorse filled field on the side of a hill above the coastal cliffs to the west of St Ives. It was reached mostly by the South West Coast Path from Porthmeor Beach. The path from the cliffs to Higher Burthallan skirts the field containing the trig. A gorse hedge protects the pillar from the south but entering the field next to the large stones on the side of the footpath to the north meant the trig could be reached by gingerly wading through 40 metres of mostly waist high bracken. The pillar has FB S7906 and its spider lacks a cap or plug. There is a wide view over the sea in the north. It looks over the St Ives Headland in the north-east across the bay to Gwithian Towans, Godrevy Point, St Agnes Beacon and the North Cornwall Coast. Carn Brea and other hills around Camborne-Redruth could be seen to the east. Knill’s Monument could be seen in the south east and the tops of Rosewall, Trevalgan and Trendrine Hills in the south-west. The site is within the West Penwith AONB and the coastal cliffs are part of the Aire Point to Carrick Du SSSI.

Followed Sagina nivalis directions. Even in high summer the trig is just visible from the path. There is a sort of track through the bracken, but there are also nettles and bracken to cope with. There is a closer point on the path, but there seems to be a dense blackthorn? hedge between the trig and the path, which means the trig is not readily accesasible from there. Still a sense of satisfaction in reaching the trig.

There was a triggers' path up thru bracken to trig. Not much of a view, just Trendine and Knavocks although presumably they could see other trig(s) inland before the scrub grew up.

It doesn't look like this one is at the top of the hill (which is a little unusual), but I bet you would get great views over the coast. Staying in nice B&B just down the road from the trig. We parked as far up the little yellow road that goes to Higher Burthallan as we could. We followed the path and just before the gate leading into Higher Burthallan Farm it turns to the right and skirts the farm. You go round a sharp right-hand bend and the trig is up on the right in rough ground. It was quite easy to spot at this time of year and I wouldn't say it was private, as there were no fences to climb over etc. The undergrowth took a bit of wading through though! Plug missing.
