One of the 12 weekends per year that Warcop is open to the public. That and the fact that the area comes under North Pennines did not feed the hunger to visit, but three Nuttalls did. Like always it turned out to be a revelation. Will be returning to scramble up Scordale ravine next time (came down today). I have to gift the remains of this pillar to places in the UK that resemble areas overseas (especially during covid). Apparently Warcop was used during the Falklands for training due to its similarities with the island. Minus the penguins. So I transported myself to the Falklands today and cost nothing. Even the scattered snow showers helped to enhance the experience.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 15th May 1960 costing £41.9s.0d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NY71/3 within the Appleby block during 1961. Levelled for height also in 1961. Last maintained by the OS in June 1983. SITE VISIT: Parked in Brough High Street. Circuituous route taking in all three trigs on the Warcop firing ranges. Advertised as non firing day on internet, red flags were not flying. Up via Musgrave Scar. Stonebuilt pillar in a state of ruin. Amazingly the spider remain intact complete with OS centre cap with raised large wide letters. Flush bracket 10800 is long gone, hazarding a guess as to which side of the pillar it was in, most likely easterly facing (~79°). The pillar is too wrecked to determine any sighting holes but the pillar bolt may still be inside what remains. Long views include the Lakeland Fells and Criffel in Dumfriesshire, nearer view to Mickle Fell. Continued to Mickle Fell, NW of the boggy peat hags, keeping high.

The pillar was in poor shape, built of local stone, but with the mortar crumbling badly. The spider was exposed(the surrounding stones had fallen away) & the plug was missing. The FB was lying on the ground at the side of the pillar so I decided to give it a good home away from the noisy gunfire.
