Repeat of our walk from 10 years ago from Rotherwick. Still as muddy but a lovely autumn afternoon, and the opportunity to visit St Mary's Church in Hartley Wespall - another George Gilbert Scott junior (as All Saints, Bakewell, qv), and well worth a visit, very impressive massive old timbers. Trig in set aside, some views south but limited by surrounding trees on field boundary. Providing a perch for a buzzard as we arrived. Metal cap, deep letters, SW s/hole open, base rather eroded, but otherwise vgc.

We parked at a metal gate to the NNE of the trig, on the north side of the road (if you're looking at the OS Explorer map, this is the gate that leads to a path that leads northwards to Thorpe's Copse). Climbed over a metal gate (a different metal gate!) (this was the gate to the N of the trig) and the trig was there in the middle of a barren field. The soil had been churned up and had dried up in the summer heat. The metal gate, the trig and the covered reservoir probably line up roughly. Original metal cap. Lovely way to end a day with 3 trigs bagged in an afternoon!

This pillar is situated in the middle of a recently harvested field - piles of hay were scattered about, although the area around the pillar itself seemed to be a barren section of the field. A gathering of teazels adorned the pillar, although their summer flowering days are long past. Whilst driving to Turgis Green, I was very nearly in a collision with a buzzard, which suddenly swooped down from out of the skies narrowly missing my windscreen. I had to brake sharply in what was quite a surreal experience. Phew!
