Having dusted and vacuumed the house in the morning and fortified with a pizza for lunch, I decided I would go out on the bike. I nearly turned round in the opening minutes as the strong wind swirled round the houses. Still, soon out into the lanes. A good rideable track from the road into the field where the reservoir is. As others have said, it is hard to reach the top, but there are a couple of slots in one corner that help. If you don't want to climb it is still readily visible. Having added to yesterday's shorts and a short sleeve top with a base layer, medium long sleeve top, leg warmers and cycle mitts, I was still only just warm enough and was glad to get back for a hot drink!

Easy approach from the road following a faint track on the N side of hedge. Bolt readily visible; forgot to check for witness marks. Had to borrow an iron rod from the base of the wind pump to use as a makeshift step in order to gain access to the top of the concrete tank. Agricultural views; drab sort of day but very mild for January.

After my success at Butt Resr I thought I’d have a look at the nearby Barton Hall Resr – surely the same location – on top of the concrete tank. Google Earth showed it was still in existence. I walked up from Church Broughton through Barton Hall, past the stables and over the medieval village. Yes – nicely exposed on top of the disused tank. What an eco friendly solution to the water supply for the hall – a wind powered pump from a well, a storage tank and gravity feed to the hall. No doubt taken out of use due to modern water quality regulations. Easy access along track from the west.
