On a weekend break in Edinburgh for wife's birthday so made a slight detour on our way to Holyroodhouse. Had been up Calton Hill before but wasn't a bagger then, so a good excuse to return. Since it's a simple walk it is easy to overlook just how spectacular the views are all around, so a score of 10 feels right.

Whilst the actual pillar remains in very good condition. I worry about the platform. I am sure Edinburgh Council are aware and monitoring. The north view across Leith and the Firth of Forth is a well worth the climb.

My 500th trig point - nicely noteable. The snow begins as the train crawls to Scotland, by the time we reach Edinburgh for the usual mid March/Spring break there's a mixture of snow, hail and rain! Anyway haggis eaten within the hour and we traipse up to Calton getting the FBM later. Magical feel seeing the hill and city scape, people battling in flimsy coats to enjoy! Does mean easy to have the trig to ourselves. Glorious cold walk around Arthurs Seat later with the swans and North Berwick Law hovering in the icy blasts.

It's number 500!

Parked up on Royal terrace below we found a few new bms here.Good path to top here the views are special being so close to the old city and beyond plus all the monuments on top its probably one of the most visited trigs in the city an easy climb up for anyone.

Log #242. Through in Embra for a meeting, so a few trigs and 10km walk around the city and Holyrood Park. Calton Hill is littered with monuments, but I'm here for the trig. It wasn't that long ago I was up here for a geocache and I had no idea there was a trig 100m behind me as I didn't look up anything before I left. I now have them all loaded into a new wee map app I downloaded. Result. Barriers up around the trig as there are some sculptures which I think I heard a security person mention that they are fireworks. Luckily the tape they used was dislodged and flapping in the wind. I strolled past it as it was no longer acting as a barrier and ignored the whistles and shouts behind. Ooh, did they mean me. I'm just a confused tourist. Amazing views.

There was snow down to 200 metres on the Fife hills but that didn't seem to deter the crowds from making it up here. Four days of walking around Edinburgh and its environs were now rapidly drawing to a conclusion for me as my train was about to depart in less than an hour. I had a good scan around the now familiar intersected stations to the north and then moved on to log just one more, Nelsons Monument.

Had visited this pillar before, Easter 1991 but wasn't sure of the exact date and well worth another look anyway. Warm and sunny on Calton Hill today, despite being cool down in the city. Rebecca suggested the pillar must have been built 3006 years ago...

A wonderful location for a trig point. Very accessible and on one of Edinburgh's many welcome green areas. Much of interest in the monuments around and even quite a few birds singing in the city. Great views of Arthur's Seat too.

Very good condition pillar despite being in the middle of a tourist trap. Some very mild graffiti. FB faces south-ish with north-ish hole open only. The top hole is plugged. Excellent views on a crisp autumn morning.

Pretty good view over Edinburgh & the Forth estuary. Lots of paths up to the summit. As mentioned its adjacent the National & Nelson monuments and the Observatorys. Nice place to visit when the suns out, surprisingly no benches in the area! Second visit on 23/03/2010 in slightly better weather conditions. Hill full of foreign (i.e. non-uk) tourists enjoying the monuments and pillars but ignoring the most important one of all!

Concrete plug, open sight N, FB S. My tourist guide book mentions the TPs neighbours - National monument, Nelson's monument and Edinburgh observatory, but not the TP. I wonder what foreign visitors make of it? do they know what it is? Good view to the N and can make out the ray to Arthurs Seat. Overcast sky making distance views difficult, but can make out the Forth Bridge. There is the remains of a large bonfire to N of TP.

Visiting Edinburgh on the Grand Princess. From Hawaii celebrating our, 808ladybug and my, honeymoon. Decided to go on a caching tour of the city instead of taking an expensive shore excursion. Thanx for bringing us up here views were great.

Thought we were going to have to walk up the hill - shock. But no, you can drive!! Great panoramic views. A very dull overcast evening after a miserable day, but the monuments up here looked great in the mist. We had just dropped Bec off for the MoonWalk. Me, Mum, Ros.

Been up here many times for New Year and Beltane but never bagged the trig. Excellent views north although you can't see many trigs to the south except Arthurs Seat as this isn't on the highest part of the hill. People practicing for Beltane in the background.

On a day visit to Edinburgh decided to visit the hill top when the rain that had been falling in stair rods all morning finally eased off. The view on a good day must be fabulous. Today however there was little to see through the all pervasive gloom, hence only a score of 7

Plenty of other architectural distractions around the summit. Took an hour out to bag this one with son-in-law whilst the ladies shopped. Great views over John Lewis'.

Happy Birthday, 63 today!!! The trig pillar, not me, I'm much younger. S3006 was completed on 4th February 1943 for the sum of £6.2s.3d. Intended as a tertiary, but like five other Edinburgh trigs was promoted to a Secondary station. Incidentally Calton Hill was a primary station in the old Principal Triangulation of Great Britain and Ireland 1783 - 1853. Wish I had got up here a bit earlier in the day, the trig was overshadowed by the Observatory. GRP 4/02/2006.

Another 30**, and plenty of tourists braving the cold wind. Its a northerly so clarity was amazing, could make out Ben Vane, Dumbartonshire, beyond Loch Lomond to the west. Fresh snow on the Ochils and a good selection of Fife bumps. Arthurs Seat blocked almost all to the south. Quick detour walking home from an interview. (sucessful, BTW. This is now my 'home trig')

The trig pillar on Edinburgh"s Calton Hill is probably a good contender for winning the prize as the UK"s most visited trig pillar, not so much by hill walkers but by tourists. I made a point of visiting this pillar on its 60th birthday. This 100m summit is just over five minutes walk from the East End of Edinburgh"s world famous Princes Street. There are numerous monuments and other visitor attractions on Calton Hill. The pillar was built on 4th February 1943 and is still in very good condition despite the crowds, bonfires, festivals and other reputed goings on up there. Rear sighting hole open (no pun intended), others plugged. The spider is plugged with cement. The polished font flush bracket faces south. 5th nearest to home. S3006 originally recorded in 1983, many intermediate visits. 27/12/2004: visited with Rob Woodall. GRP.

The first trig point of many on my coastal walk along Britain, I reached the pillar in a slightly inebriated state, having drunk a bottle of champagne at the castle drawbridge with my girlfriend. A literal high on which to start a year-long walk.
