Up the ROW from fuad to SSE across three fields. Bright evening but brief light faun shower blew in prompting pulling out my poncho What a deliciously good situation white and couple of metres up on a bank above the fields and gently protected by the overshadowing oak tree. FB facing east

(2881) Parked at SE 22403 78232 and then an enjoyable walk through the woodland. One or two folks out today but largely I had the route to myself. An easy deviation off the PRoW gets you to the pillar. All good, though centre cap is a plain plastic replacement. Pillar history: Built on the 4th of June 1953, at a cost of £15 0s 3d. Last maintained by the OS in May of 1975.

I was staying at Grewelthorpe so I couldn't miss this one. A pleasant walk from the lane up through two fields of barley then a grass field. The pillar sits on an old banked enclosure with good views once I had come out of the overhanging trees. Sight holes are open but some stones had been dropped down the tube before the plug was capped.

Parked at Hack Fall and followed the woodland track as far as the FP leading off to the left. Followed that around, through the gate and up the hill. Over the style, then across the grassy field to the pillar. Nice location guarded by a tree that was probably just a seedling, nothing more, when the cast was made. Fine views over the Vale of Mowbray. A pleasant 30 minutes walk.

Came across this on a circular walk from Grewelthorpe. Sits high on a little mound just off the ROW. As others have said, it’s in excellent condition. Looks like it’s been newly painted in magnolia.

Nice approach through the woods then across a couple fields following the row. Pillar sits under a lovely old beech tree which has grown to block some views. Fairly fresh coat of paint, more cream than pure white but nice to see it looked after. Plastic cap in spider.

What a pillar this is... I parked on Nutwith Lane at SE 21058 77829 and made my way through the woods - thanks to the Swinton Estate for the access. I left the woods on the ROW heading south around Horsepasture Hill and quickly saw the trig ahead - it has had a stunning new coat of paint recently. A quick hop over a knackered barbed wire fence and an easy stroll through a pasture field and the pillar is sat atop a grassy bank under the shade of a huge old beech tree. It is a beautiful, wonderful spot. It was so peaceful, with the sun shining and the grasshoppers buzzing; I could have sat there all day. The pillar is in excellent condition, and the new paint job makes it look new (albeit it isn't quite white, it's more a vague magnolia shade.) I returned the same way. Highly recommended.

Parked at SE 231 775 and followed the public right of way through Oak Bank. There were signs up saying that the Earl was kindly letting us use his woodland - very gracious of him I thought - and the woodland was particularly beautiful in the morning sun. Followed the path into the field to the West of the pillar to find it was planted up but was able to follow "tramlines" to the trig.

Easy access close to the footpath, we walked up through the woods. It's on top of the bank of a square enclosure, though the bank doesn't go all the way round, part of the sides are just steep hill-slopes. The National Monument Record at pastscape.org.uk lists it as possibly a Roman army camp or possibly a medieval enclosure (which basically means no-one knows how old it is or what it was used for).

HISTORY: Pillar completed 4th July 1953 costing £15.0s.3d. Levelled for height in 1954. Computed as secondary triangulation station SE38/7 within the Harrogate block during 1955. Last maintained by the OS in May 1975. SITE VISIT: Approached from ENE. Free public car park off east side of road by bend at SE230774. Followed mapped forest route to SE225775 then across grazing field to top. Under a tree and behind barbed wire from SE grazing field. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre capped with grey plastic disc fitted by Jon Rouse, 29/06/2003. Flush bracket faces ESE, ~123°. All four horizontal sight holes open, pillar polt viewable. Limited open outlook.

A short walk up a PROW from the car park for Hackfall woods. Trig is in good condition but partially obscured by a large beech tree growing right next to it on the little knoll and which obscure the good views into the Vale of York. Trig in good condition with plastic plug and all four holes open.

Visible and easily accessible (after harvest time) being just off public footpath. Pillar stands at the end of a raised area between fields so this adds its raised aspect. Everything in good order.

Yorkshire. Parked to the west on the lane in the Hackfall car park and walked up the track through the woods. Snowy ascent to the trig pillar atop its hill alongside a beech tree. Lovely distant views across to the snow covered North York Moors. All four sightholes open, plastic plug.

Really enjoyed my visit to this trig. We walked up through woodland in deep snow, bright sunshine and blue skies - the lighting was beautiful and the snowy views quite exceptional. Plastic plug.

Just off the footpath and on the summit of a hedgerow. Had to battle through a head-high field of cattle beans and wheat and it was very wet!! Plastic plug replacement. Traces of white paint. All sightholes open. Excellent views to the N.
