Bagged as YSM174 Carcant Hill. First of the day, good forest track most of the way up then a fire break with a very sinky middle. Went over gate, wall and under electric fence for no reason as trig is on forest side of wall!

Parked to the SE on the B709 at the start of the forestry track. Kept going straight until we emerged from the trees and reached a gate through the wall. Followed a faint track up the grass field all the way to the trig. Easy underfoot, but a steep climb until about half way. Great views down the glen. Trig on other side of the wall but is easily crossed

After driving up from Peebles in the pouring rain this felt a fairly remote spot. Rain stopped just before I set forth, and back to the car in 45 minutes. The aforementioned remoteness was spoiled by the sight of three windmills appearing on the adjacent hillside just as I approached the top. Great place for more windmills ......NOT.

Walked up the forest track from the Heriot road. Kept to the left at the fork and up to the gate in the stone wall. Followed this wall up the steep rise to the summit. Took about 50 minutes for the round trip. Good views N-W-S including yet another new wind farm, condition as logged previously.

Third visit. Parked without causing obstruction in entrance of forest track at NT380520. Straight up track to west edge of wood then northerly to summit. Pillar in east side of boundary wall. Slight frost damage to top, other wise good. Spider retains OS centre cap with deep indented letters. Flush bracket faces 83 (east), towards woods. Vented through west sight hole. 180 panorama from SSE clockwise to NNW, remiander blocked by trees.

top screed damaged, metal cap, deep letters. At summit just inside wall on forest side, nice view. Sunny morning, icy wind. From SW, 379519, track leads to forest edge, gate, path ascends pasture to trig. Could have driven in, but having got the car stuck yesterday at the foot of *Carsinker*, didnt want to risk a lock-in on *Carcant*

Lovely morning with very clear air. While eastward views were blocked by forestry, the Moorfoots and Pentlands were very sharp and snow covered Ben Ledi(100km) could be seen between Capelaw Hill and Bells Hill. Pillar has lost some top surface to frost. All metal work OK , pillar still painted and the lower parts are covered in moss. Two horse riders passed by.

The trig pillar is mostly in very good condition, but the top is damaged with bits missing, probably due to frost. The spider is complete, the OS cap has a deep stamped font. The flush bracket faces ENE towards the woods. Carcant Hill is in the Moorfoot Hills just over two miles west of the A7 at Heriot. It is the most northerly of a cluster of similarly (fb) numbered trig pillars built c1958 at the same time as some S98xx series also in this area. The pillar stands just outside grazing land in the edge of woodland in a gap between the trees and the boundary. This hill can be accessed easily from most directions. Views to other Moorfoot Hills and Bowbeat Windfarm. Mobile phone signal black spot. Revisited and photographed 21/05/2003, GRP.

Pillar completed 2nd August 1958 costing 33.4s.7d. In 1959 this marker was computed as a tertiary triangulation station in Secondary Block NT48, Edinburgh. The pillar was probably intended to be part of Peebles secondary block NT33, but got added to block NT48. The flush bracket was levelled for height in 1959. This site was last maintained by the OS in August 1981. Original visit by GRP to record the FB number, 30/06/1985.
