Parked in lay-by opposite ruined Carn Galver mine at on B3306. South along road for about 100 metres then onto footpath heading south east and uphill. Footpath flowing with water. After about six or seven hundred metres turned south and west to head for high ground. Path fairly well worn. Steep in places, through a gate and continued uphill. Pillar came into view from about a hundred metres away. On a pile of rocks. Cap missing. Great views all around.

Simple but strenuous walk up from parking area on B3306, trig pillar standing out proudly from a large heap of granite stones, like a collapsed cairn! Great condition but central plug missing again. Amazing views all round. We had our picnic sheltering from the wind behind nearby rocky outcrop. Met a group of ponies on the way back to the car. Like one of the previous triggers, I don't see why this is called Carn Galver which is on the opposite side of the valley. The pillar is on Watch Croft.

Don't do it my way...Direct & downright nasty, undoubtedly my roughest & toughest conquest to date taking 'trigbagging' to 'the extreme' ...Yesterday added Tregonning Hill to my personal 'trig-bag' with, post Zennor Cliff, WATCH CROFT claimed as my 8th Penzance trig today. Parking at Carn Galver GR 42225 36634, crossing the road & accessing the path SE, decision made I went for a direct ascent thro' anything & everything in my way. Knee-deep heather & face-high fern, both intermingled with prickly gorse with ups & downs, climbs & falls making for an extremely rough passage taking about an hour & a quarter both ways. With each & every step came the necessity to push from in-front of me, in my face fern simultaenously taking care to avoid the prickly stuff, quite literally in 'upto my neck'. As if I hadn't enough to contend with, to add to the arduosity part way up & near the top a coupl'a barbed wire fences had been 'thrown-in' amongst the undergrowth for good measure! Extremely unpleasant at the time with lots'a swear words 'spent' but retrospectively so, so, so satisfying...Having gotten down in one-piece & relatively un-scathed, looking back just couldn't believe i'd been up & down thro' it all. Incredible but absolute madness & wouldn't recommend this route to anyone unless like me prepared for an exceptionally rough 'trig-trott' & would say that over-trousers & long sleeved shirt are essential with gloves being a bonus. Despite wearing wellington boots, my socks were absolutely covered in all sorts of vegetation. Ironic that in managing to avoid the rough passage required in accessing Trink Hill's trig Saturday gone, rough passage 'lay waiting' today on the slopes of Watch Croft...Just goes to prove that you get away with nothing in this life! Despite weather warnings referencing wind & rain tomorrow's plan is for a quick in & out of Raginnis close by Mousehole.

Follow track to gate fastened with string, you'll note a metal gate on your left slightly higher with another board & map stating where you are. It's the top end of a track from the first board. Not easily walked up in summer due to bracken cover. Continue on your track uphill towards trig pillar. It appears on a cairn of granite cobbles. A side track from the path, right, takes you to the cairn. On a clear day the views are stunning from this highest Trig Point in West Penwith. Note the Ding Dong mine engine house and chimney. The heavy rain shower had cleared through leaving us soaked but joyous for the views to Mount's Bay, St Ives and Hayle Bays and the high moorland of this most beautiful part of west Cornwall.

Like others, we made a real pig's ear of access to this one. Do not be tempted by the path crossing the N flank of the hill you can see from the mine car park. This meets a barbed wire fence and several hundred metres of knee high heather and gorse. Instead, follow the ROW SE to a broad grassy crossing path (co-incident with the NT boundary on the map) and turn R up a very straight forward path leading to the summit. Fog returned during our arduous ascent, so no views, but trig is in vgc (centre open), and Old Man somehow retained his SOH throughout, a small miracle!

The pillar stands in the middle of a cairn on a gorse and bracken cloaked hill to the north west of Penzance. An ancient standing stone and a more recent unroofed horseshoe shaped dry stone shelter are nearby. The trig lacks a cap or plug and has FB S1721. The site was reached from Carn Galver Mine by taking the public footpath up the hill from the cattle grid. An unmapped, narrow path leads from the right of way just before the field boundary at SW424360 to the summit of Watch Croft where the pillar is found. From the summit clouds could be seen rolling in from the sea at Cape Cornwall to the south west. The twin granite peaks of Carn Galver are to the north east and in the distance the morning mist was clearing from Trendrine Hill. Ding Dong Mine stands prominent on a hill to the south east and the weather was clearing from Mounts Bay in the distance. Returning to the public footpath my morning walk continued with my son through the moors to the Nine Maidens Stone Circle and Ding Dong Mine then returning via Mên-an-tol. The area is within the West Penwith sector of the Cornwall AONB and the St Just Mining District of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. The Ding Dong Engine House is a Grade II listed structure and commands a stunning view of the surrounding moorland and over Mounts Bay.
