Parked on side of road near Trevassa Farm. North east along road for two hundred metres then north onto bridleway. Very muddy with lots of water. After about eight hundred metres reached junction of paths. Slightly confusing, went straight on to start with but felt like it wasn’t the right direction. Turned back to junction of paths then headed north east, along field edges for another eight hundred metres or so. Reached the cliff path but looked like it only went eastwards. Turned west for a short distance then could see the cliff path below the level of the field. Another five hundred metres or so and pillar came into view. Last fifty metres of path quite rocky and uneven. Relief, beginning to wonder if I was completely off track. Fantastic views of the coast, sun was out at the time. Spider and cap in place.

Followed the ROW down from the B3306 to Treveal and then the improved path down the stream to the little granite clapper footbridge. Short climb up slope to the pillar which has a horizontal crack running all around the four faces. The SW face has the aggregate pebbles weathering proud. A delightful spot and a good route in. You can see the pillar on Trendrine Hill but I didn't fancy another heather and gorse flounder. It'll have to wait for another glorious day.

The pillar stands on a small plinth on the South West Coast Path in area of heather above the cliffs to the west of St Ives. My walk started from Trevalgan Hill. The coast path was reached by means of the Trevalgan Farm Trail. A couple of hairline cracks encircle the pillar but it appears to be structurally sound. It has a metal cap with narrow raised lettering and FB S8139. The view from the site takes in the ocean to the north, much of the North Cornwall coastline can be seen to the east. Trendrine Hill and other moors and hills of Penwith can are to the south. The stretch of the coastal path from Trevalgan Cliff to River Cove is spectacular. The cliff scenery is magnificent; butterflies were flitting amongst the cliff top vegetation; a falcon was seen perched on a ledge; sea birds were swirling below and a couple of seals were seen peering out of the water near River Cove. This part of the coast is part of the Aire Point to Carrick Du SSSI and is within the West Penwith part of the Cornwall AONB. The public footpath in the bottom of the valley to Trevail Mill is very overgrown in places; next I shall investigate the mapped path running higher up the slope to the west.
