Another murky day in mid Wales so a good day to visit conifer plantations. So, from pull in on A458 next to turning for Cae'r lloi farm to NE of the hill. Steady plod along forestry vehicle access track all the way to little quarry under pillar. Fortunate that quarrying stopped when it did or it would be RIP pillar. Doesn't feel like a summit as no views and much of extensive area of gently rolling plantation is much the same height.

Lay-by parking at GR 953 128...Taking a right from having parked, crossing the bridge & going thro' gates about Cae'r-lloi, looking for but initially not finding, the track 'heading' SW, proceeded over a somewhat rough fellside to eventually locate the track not too distant from the pad-locked gate at GR 937 115. There were two caravans all shuttered-up en-route, most probably something to do with deer stalkers & a Ranger truck passed us to whom we waved & them back to us...Climbing the gate, followed good forestry tracks to locate the trig off to the right, hidden somewhat behind a quarry lake & close by dense foliage. Etrexed back the same way but persisted with the track all tbe way back to the road. Engaged with two bikers on the track back, Paul & Kevin, real pleasant guys into 'trigbagging' with whom exchange of experiances encountered with trigs was most enjoyable. Nice one guys & keep it up...16368 steps & 7.3 miles! Only two trigs to get to complete both sides of the Cadair Idris Llyn Tegid OS map, Mynydd Coch & Rhobell Fawr. Wales, what a place to walk, walking the Tarren Hills has been tough but what a blast it's been...At 666 metres, Tarren y Gesail's a real 'Devil of a peak'!

Parked to the NE in the small layby near the entrance to Cair'r Lloi farm to avoid the ford. Then on FP through farm to join start of track up through sheepy pastures and into the forest. A pretty isolated spot though evidence it is used by trail bikers or alike. High point a short distance from the trig point.

The remoteness of this trigpoint from public transport has had me scratching my head for a good long while. My solution, today, was to bag it by bike on an extended loop from Caersws to Welshpool train stations. Such an unfrequented, peaceful area and it felt like quite a privilege to get to experience it myself.

Had planned to visit this one for a while but always put it off as the open hills appeal more than forestry. It looked as if it could be a bit awkward and had toyed with different approaches. In the end settled for a walk in from the North East off A458 (great biking road by the way!)from SH949129 you drop down to a ford which could be a problem after heavy rain, was about 8" deep today but surprisingly strong as the spaniel discovered ! The path then leads onto open hillside for approx 2km then into forest, from here is quite straightforward, the OS mapping is good. The views from the pillar are limited but ok. Best ones are from the walk in ,today had snow dusted Dovey Hills to look over.Very pleasant place and,for forestry land quite enjoyable.Pillar is to SW side of mast just at tree line.In very good condition .

Open access eases the problems here. Park at the end of the road from Llanbrynmair after the stream by entrance to Blaencwm. Then either use brideleway and farmers track (on map) to gain access land for a short tough climb on Radnor hills terrain without the footpaths or swing east and collect the longer forestery track all the way to the trig. I climbed the former and returned on the latter with a short cut near the end but would reverse things if I ever came up there again. Condition unchangeed. Marks for the view on the way in not from the trig. (allow at least 3 hours for this one its surprisingly tough on the legs and ankle :-)

Ab awkward one, a long way in over routes that may be opposed. Had an epic struggle trying to join two forest tracks on my exit. Notorious amongst Marilyn baggers. In a clearing in hideous forestry plantations. The limited access improvements in Wales do not mitigate the horrors of that forest. Can be driven up with a fishing permit from Llanbrynmair A.C.
