Up from Siddington Lane small layby then through the farm - no footpath signs but all friendly and near links to Transpennine cycleway. Chemical works glower over this green vestige very atmospherically. On the way to "bag" Trafford UA top - excitement!

Who are they then?

Found the pesky creature.... It was lower than the middle of the path. No wonder it was easy for bramble and nettle to obscure it on last visit. 39 double paces north of the east west track (65m) and about three metres west of the north track. Reused an old wheeze on Friday to great effect. Seeking out Carrington Moss this time from the north, I was stopped again by a Man United security guard and another barrier. I said, " I just want to drive down the track and along to the right under the pylons to visit the triangulation pillar there." Bemused look. "why??" " For photographic research purposes". "No, I don't think so." Then I remembered a fictional organisation I dreamed up in the mid nineties and printed off some official looking A4 forms to put on a clip board. 'TriPIC' the 'Triangulation Pillar Inspectorate Collectorate.' Thinking on my feet quickly, I said, " I'm from TriPIC the triangulation pillar inspectorate collectorate. I know there's a Manchester United training ground down there and you want to protect them from snoopers but I'm not interested in that, I want to turn right before that, to the pillar." " OH, RIGHT, okay then, they never tell us these things down there" Up goes the barrier and I drive to within 60m the pillar. Result! Good idea for anyone else to use in any situation when a GOML might be impressed and help you get to a pillar more easily!

Aaaaargh...tantrum...throw my dummy out of the pram. Cannot believe I couldn't find it. Okay unwise to come in sandals and shorts at the end of summer but still thought I'd find it okay. Walked up and down the track three times. Checked the map measured the amount of distance north of the track junction to about hundred metres. Walked back to junction twice and paced it out. Got on my knees and peered into the nettle and bramble stems as you do.....and failed, failed failed. I swear I'll come back in the winter with a pot of red paint and paint the entire pillar red for my anger and frustration not for Manchester United !!! Came from the south and got stopped at a locked gate before the Man United training faculty that I knew nothing about. He was a scouser and Liverpool fan. Added to the days irony

Completed an anticlockwise circuit back along non-footpath tracks - from where I saw the football place - not that it was of any interest to me.
