Parked in the wide entrance to Whitehill Farm and strolled down the lane, then up onto the gorse-covered ridge to easily find the pillar: cap in place with shallow lettering, and all four sight-holes open. On return met a local farmer who was a very knowledgeable 'map person'. We had a great conversation about all things mapping including William Roy and the early surveying times. He also knew that the OS HQ is in Southampton - that impressed me, naturally!

Friendly farmer's wife allowed access and parking at Castleton farm to north. Did extensive pruning of gorse with loppers. Could do with a hacksaw for some thicker branches but access is now easy off farmer's track thru' gorse patch.

OMG. Last visited about 30 years ago (see early photos) but now had to cut my way through with secateurs and crawl to pillar. Room to park car at roadside near Whitehill farm, along road and round field edge at Castleton farm. Ploughing to edge so muddy approach. Fight through fences and bushes. Trig best approached from West side. Machete recommended.

Wasn't 100% sure the best way to approach this. Parked on bend by farmhouse then went into field, crossed wall and tried to look for a way up through the gorse, no joy. Then crossed back over the wall and down to the ruin, then over a fallen barbed wire fence and back along to the trigpoint which is very hard to spot and get to in the middle of the gorse.

Good condition pillar almost completely engulfed in gorse. FB faces north-ish with W/S/N holes open. Couldn't check E due to gorse. Cap present with sunken lettering. Parked at farm and initially approached through field. Ended up 40m away with that 40m being gorse. Jumped fence towards the farm gate and headed round the back of the gorse where the pillar was. On the way, spotted a Neolithic ring marking on a bit of exposed bedrock and the ruined tower to the south is also worth a look.
