iProbably the best condition pillar I've logged... Fairly fresh looking coat of whitewash, centre plug and spider bracket still intact. Stunning views all round including towards Skye. Short steep, tough ascent up though as near pathless.

Parked near the Catacol hotel and headed up the coastal path until about the 3rd telegraph pole and then bit the bullet and headed up the hill. Tough going for me but got there in the end, love to see these all painted and shining in the sun. Hats off to Arran trigman for keeping these all spic and span.

The first of the beautifully looked after and painted Arran trigs. First Scottish island I visited 16 years ago - great to be back - staying in one of the beautiful Apostles. Grabbed this one in an evening walk fresh off the Calmac.

Last maintained by the OS in June 2001. SITE VISIT: Parked by west side of road (C147, formerly A841) at Catacol. Through gate just south of first house and 50m east along track to style. Once the initial bog is negotiated a direct ascent can be taken straight to the summit. Random depths of heather enroute. Cnoc Leacainn Duibhe. White painted pillar in good condition. Spider retains original plug with deen indented letters. Flush bracket faces SSW, ~206°. Vented through sight hole on FB face. Full 360° panoramic view largely lost to heavy rain and low cloud at time of visit.

Parked at Catacol and took path up from just south of the village. Once at highest point of path walked due east up the hill. A beautifully sunny day so the steep climb/descent was fine but can imagine it'll be hard work when wet/slippery.

Picked up this trig on way back to the car at the end of our Beinn Bhreac walk. Another very wet day, rain didn't let up all day, not so much wind though. Parked at Fairhaven and walked the length of Gleann Diomhan to Beinn Bhreac. Towards the end of the higher level return we diverted at around the 300m contour line to head towards Cnoc Leacainn Duibhe for the Catacol trig. The descent to the road at Catacol hamlet was quite steep and slippery over heather clad moorland and particularly slippery over large sections where the heather had been burned off. We had some limited views at this level, but cloud down on the hill most of the day. Pillar had a fairly good coat of white paint; original cap in place.

There are 17 pillar trig points on Arran. To get to this trig you are best to park your car near the catacol Bay Hotel then go to the right of houses and follow track for short distance then climb over style, there is a good path at the begining but you will eventually have to make your own route up a steep climb. Great views at the top.

The day started out early following the coast path from Sannox to Lochranza. After booking in at the youth hostel I then followed the main road as far as Catacol, then took the gated track and stile up onto the hillside. There was a faint deer trail for part of the way, but the rest was then through heather to the top. By this point rain was driving hard at my back from seaward and all I noted of the trig pillar was the cap being in place and the interesting combination of numbers in the flush bracket. I didn’t even manage to secure a picture before retreating back down to Lochranza. I took a more direct line this time, aiming directly at the ferry that was just coming in, and soon joined up with the Postman’s Path down by the power lines. All that was left was just a short walk along the road back to the hostel, splashing through puddles to try and clean myself up a bit. Quite a miserable afternoon on the whole for a trig that could have delivered so much more.

The first trig I can remember visiting. Sometime in August 1963 - a month long family holiday staying at No.5 The Row (The Apostles). We had an expedition up the hill at the back - there's an 8mm cine film of this somewhere. Climbed many more times in the 60s - sometimes to watch the sunset over Kintyre. Scores 10 for great memories.
