Pulled in to car park at The Cat tearoom, early so only one other car there. Conveniently located opposite start of track heading south west and uphill. Started off in the rain and the dark but was able to follow the track. Fairly good surface after an initial steep climb away from the road. After about a mile there was a track turning to the east but higher ground was further to the south west. About this point the track became very muddy, rutted with tyre tracks which were full of water. Sides of track were uneven on grassy tussocks and slippery. Track veered to the south. Couldn’t make out any features on the skyline, it was still dark. Was going to head for a tree to get a bit of shelter from the strong wind and rain to check on here for some help when I suddenly noticed the pillar a few metres away on the east side of the track. Relieved. Cap missing. No views as it was dark but could make out lights from a village or town to the east, probably Upavon. Light started to improve on the way back down. Still raining. Waterproof trousers are not waterproof.

I decided to pick this one up, even though it was a bit out of my way because I would only do 25miles to complete the others. And it was such a lovely day for a cycle. Went along the road that is the other side of the River Avon to the A345. Only joining it at Upavon. Went up Charlton Drove to get to trig, as its is just off it. I will say that it is slightly damaged because of crack in base at back.

Managed to park in Charlton village - turned left at the church where there's parking for several cars. Then footpath across a field, cross the A342 and up the drove to the pillar which has open cap, & all sight-holes open. Enjoyed the views northwards of Martinsell Hill, Walker's Hill, Milk Hill, Tan Hill, and the Alton Barnes White Horse. En route to Swindon Town 1-0 Coventry City, and as always a scorcher for the first Saturday of the season.

Parking difficult in Charlton so parked on the side of the A342 at its junction with the minor road leading to Charlton. Took the Charlton Drove leading toward the Salisbury Plain military training area to the trig, then skirted the boundary of the training area returning along Rushall Drove and through Rushall village for a pleasant 5 miles. Cloud was down though so no views across the plain otherwise almost certainly a higher score. Pillar is in good condition with metalwork painted white.

The pillar is situated between a fence and a grass track on the edge of Salisbury Plain. The site was reached from the west along the firing range perimeter road from Redhorn Hill although the short walk from the Casterley Camp guard hut to the east would have been easier. It has peeling white paint and FB S 1943 but lacks a cap or plug. To the south and west is the rolling open grassland and occasional scrub of the interior of Salisbury Plain. To the north is the chalk ridge of Milk Hill and Tan Hill on the other side of the Vale of Pewsey. Nearby to the east is a farm, further on the chalk lands rise again the on the other side of the Avon. The firing range to the south of the perimeter road was occupied by crows and skylarks and is part of the unimproved chalk downland of the Salisbury Plain SSSI. Nearby Casterley Camp is an Iron Age enclosure.
