There is a decent path - quite discernable, not too steep - to the summit of the hill, running along the western edge of the field from Fernbank Road, then to the southern end of the hillfort, where it doubles back along the edge towards the trig. The good news is that I found this path. The bad news is that I only found it on the way down. There are a lot of unmapped paths and trails through the wood, but if you go the wrong way, it's easy to find a ridiculously steep or overgrown section. I made several mistakes, and my vertigo was triggered more than once on the steeper slopes. I found the ascent more challenging that it ought to be. Still, the wood is quite pretty, and filled with deer and squirrels and fieldmice, all of which I startled as a crashed my way up. There's also a makeshift tent halfway up, which looks like someone might be living rough here. Right at the northern end of the hillfort, the fence is completely flattened, allowing very easy access into the field. Trig itself has been scratched by previous (presumably juvenile) visitors, and was covered in flies at time of visit. Forest surrounding the field obscures a fair bit of the view, which is a pity. Pillar otherwise in good condition, but unremarkable - a bit of an anti-climax after the journey up.
