OS records a bolt at Donnington Castle destroyed Nov 1962 with this one computed 1963, so it seems to have replaced the former for some reason. Castle built 1386, demolished 1646 after withstanding 18 mth siege by Parliamentarian forces in civil war. Gatehouse only survives; a Grade I listed scheduled ancient monument. There is no access to the interior so location and condition of bolt is unknown. ***Updated 7 Nov 2014. Contacted English Heritage for access. They confirm bolt is extant but the ladder to the top of the turret is no longer there so they are unable to give me access.

Approximate time. Using heli-cam I hovered over the site of the destroyed bolt on the main roof of the castle (TP21524) and the SE turret where this one supposedly is. So what could I see? At first glance upon the circular leaded rooftop there were in evidence: 1) A football; 2) a large chunk of masonry and 3) some small chunks of mortar. On site watching the live video link I couldn't make out where a bolt could be. However after studying the photos and video the craft took I have come to the conclusion that the bolt is there, and was originally on top of one of the ridges of the leaded roof. However the covering of the ridge - including the bolt - appears to have folded over in the middle at roughly a 90 degree angle such that the bolt faces sideways instead of upwards. Further details and photos to follow... Incidentally I was using a 5.8GHz video link back from the camera on board which was being subjected to interference hereabouts from someone's private security system. So if you use a similar frequency here choose your exact channel carefully to avoid seeing someone's driveway and tennis court instead of your on board video! :)
