Lovely position, far reaching views. Walked up from Chinley station, up public footpaths and open access land. If there was a trig pillar on my private land, in such a prominent position and so close to open access land, I would accept that people may wish to visit it and I would provide a stile so that wall climbing was not necessary. Such a simple solution.

Parked the car on Buxton Rd in Chinley opposite a church. Headed uphill and across the railway onto Maynestone Rd passing the war memorial. Took the PROW heading NW up onto the open access land of Cracken Edge. Quite a climb but good views back over Chinley on a pleasant early spring day. Meandered through the disused quarry eventually emerging on the top due East of the pillar. Just one wall to climb followed by a short final climb onto the summit of Chinley Churn. Pillar is in good condition with all sight holes open and no erosion around the base but the original cap has been replaced with plastic. Views are good but not quite as impressive as those from nearby Lantern Pike. Transmitter on Ladder Hill easily visible but I couldn't make out the adjacent pillar. Continued North above the abandoned quarry eventually descending to Whiterakes and across fields to Peep-O-Day. Followed bridleway NW to Foxholes Clough where I discovered a lovely stepped waterfall. Climbed up Foxholes Clough onto the moor from where I could see The Cage of Lyme Park in the distance. Followed bridleway South, eventually emerging onto Over Hill Road at Throstle Bank and then downhill back into Chinley.
