Deep cracks around FB; centre hole slightly displaced - perhaps suggesting the pillar is starting to collapse. Hadnt realised this hill is a local celebrity so was surprised to find a car park, nearly full midday Sunday. Well made trail from 648868 to summit. Superb tor overtopping trig by c.10m. Returned via Mt Shade (a Yeaman).

One of my top ten hills definately! This hill is a spectacular sight when seen from the Cairn O Mount road or from the walk in. Walked in from Spital Cottage, had a really enjoyable scramble on the steep side of the huge granite tor which forms the summit and then went on to the trig, perfect weather. Went onwards to Mount Battock after this one. To quote the old rhyme: "Clochnaben and Bennachie, Are twa landmarks fae the sea."

First visit. To record FB number. HISTORY: Pillar completed 10th May 1950, cost not on record. Computed as secondary triangulation station NO89/9 within the Aberdeen block during 1950. Levelled for height also in 1950. Last maintained by the OS in July 1973. SITE VISIT: Trig pillar in good condition, inside a wind shelter mid way between two large rocky outcrops. Due to the popularity of this summit with day trippers, the spider no longer retains an OS centre plug. The flush bracket is on the southeast face of the pillar. With its distinctive shape, Clachnaben dominates the skyline for miles around.
