Disappointing to get so close and still not be able to see the pillar. The stone wall must be at least 10 feet high and is considerably higher in places with an electric fence in top. There is a wire gate in the corner where the pillar is sited but I couldn't see it. OS showed that I was right next to it so I assume is close to the wall on the inside. Taking the word of others who by good luck managed to gain access that it is still there.

Wow. I don't think the Pentagon has this much Security. I doubt even the Milk Tray man would get in. I'm actually fuming. The pillar is right next to the (great) Wall (of Radcliffe). and then there's fences within that to prevent the crashed alien ship or whatever else they're protecting from being seen. I've paid a fortune to United Utilities over the years, the least they could do is make the (public owned) Trig Pillar accessible somehow. Has anyone tried contacting them about gaining access? I did with Godley reservoir and they couldn't be bothered responding. Disgraceful.

This Trig Point is not normally accessible because it is behind locked gates with a high perimeter wall. However, I was returning home and noticed that there were United Utilities vans present on the site so I went up the hill for an exploration. Fortunately the outer gates were open and I was able to gain access to see the pillar, which is fully intact. The views across to Manchester, Bolton and Bury were fantastic on a lovely sunny day.

But the searchlight got me, and as I dropped to the ground, a burst of automatic fire raked the stonework above me. Then I was running, the car in sight, the sound of sirens and baying guards in my ears. Well, that was the fantasy version! The truth was that workmen were there and they had left the gate open.
