Friendly workmen; no problem in allowing access. Trig in vgc; plug intact. Tree in the corner of the compound has been cut down but the pillar doesn't appear to be at risk from the developments. Not clear how they got the earth-moving plant inside (forgot to ask) as the gate with steps is the only entrance. High walls topped with broken glass, inner security fence (electrified I think), spiky-topped gate with barbed-wire surround and now CCTV. United Utilities certainly keep their water supplies safe! Thanks to Keith Stevens and Bonatti for the alert on this one.

Very well defended. So I went in at night with grapling hook and mattress to spread over the glass topped wall. I waited for the searchlights to move on, then I was over and in, the pillar at my mercy. Got my photo, and I was soon away back over the wall. But the searchlight got me, and as I dropped to the ground, a burst of automatic fire raked the stonework above me. Then I was running, the car in sight, the sound of sirens and baying guards in my ears. Well, that was the fantasy version! The truth was that workmen were there and they had left the gate open. They were in their cabin, enjoying a well earned two hour lunchbreak, so I got in without being disturbed. Pillar good, original plug, surrounded by wheelbarrows
