Ferry from Laxo to Symbister on a day trip to Whalsay. First of the island's 4 trigs; drove to within 65m of it - track a bit rough and steep in places but the faithful little Kia managed it ok. A Vanessa pillar sits on a large concrete plinth; original centre cap retained, raised lettering; LHS sight hole open. Extensive panoramic views.

Panoramic scenery is well worth the bit of a climb to get there. Weather was wonderful for this time of year. All that and a Vanessa pillar as well.

A short walk up a good track from the settlement of Clate past remnants of RAF buildings. The cylindrical pillar sits atop a square concrete plinth; FB faces NW; NE sighthole open, others plugged; original top with raised letters. Excellent views of Bressay and Noss and the SW corner of Whalsay itself. Out Skerries also visible with the lighthouse (TP9662) standing out in the sunshine.

A bright and windy day making it hard to stand or take photographs. Short distance views of Whalsay were clear but more distant ones were suffering from day after day of salt laden strong SE winds.

I don't know why, but I really underestimated how great this trig was going to be. I should have known better because all the other cylindrical pillars in Shetland I'd seen were top mark jobs, and this one proved to be no different. Noss Head and Bressay were back, dominating the horizon to the south and I really had the feeling of having almost come full circle after over three weeks spent walking around the isles.
