Trigging at dawn in 2 degree temperatures..... Only the intrepid. Original cap. Between Malmesbury and Royal Wootton Bassett. Considering previous posts of considerable bramble and hawthorn, the hedges have had a severe scalping. I further manicured round it to leave it looking quite dapper.

Geocaching in the area. Parked in a large lay-by on the B4042, near the junction with Clay Street. I followed the footpath from that junction through the field until the stile in the corner - the trig is in the hedge near-by. There is a gap by the stile that gives access to the next field which provides a better view and a chance to read the FB. The trig was visited in early September so was hidden by a lot of fresh hedge growth.

Parking on Clay Street, then back along to road junction, map shows a footpath entering the field at the junction, there are no signs so just wandered in and along N edge of field, Pillar is located in the field to the N of the footpath, there are several gaps in the hedge/fence and are easy get over. Good condition.

They were doing a lot of roadworks on the road so i went up the path that started at the junction to the East and went along in the field on the other side of the hedgerow. So i had to climb through a hole next to the style. Not the easiest way to get to it! If you come from the road, then there is a gate and you just walk straight to it. The TP is in the hedge and is getting a little lost.

Visited this trig on a circular walk from Little Somerford (St John's church worth a visit, full of interest within), to Great Somerford (likewise St Peter & St Paul's) and beside the fledgling Bristol Avon. Pillar awkwardly set within a prickly hedge and with some frisky heifers pushing me I managed to confirm that the cap remains in place and that two sight-holes are open. And then to Swindon Town 1-2 Oldham Athletic - oh dear, not 'the best in the west' at the moment.

The pillar stands near the flat summit of a small hill to the southeast of Malmesbury. It is sited on the edge of a grass field next to a brambly hedge. The pillar has a slight lean; it has a metal cap with shallow lettering and FB S2419. A footpath was taken up the hill from the church at Little Somerford in the southwest. The path runs on the other side of the hedge to the pillar. It is possible to crawl under the fence near the pillar. The easier option is to use the gap in the hedge a little to the east. Lower land stretches into the distance to the north. The top of the low wooded ridge and water tower above Braydon Wood can be seen to the northeast and the top of the hill at Bradenstoke is to the south. There is a better view across Dauntsey Vale to Bradenstoke from the path that descends the hill to the east of the village.
