From HP 6481 1295. Took a direct line across pastures which increasingly became boulderized, some stock fencing to negotiate. Nice remote feel to the cliff top location. Pillar retains an original centre cap, deeply indented lettering; LHS sight hole open. Extensive sea and landscape panorama.

I parked at the end of the road at Skeggie and walked down a track giving access to the hillside. After much recent rain the 'firm turf' referred to by martine41 was quite squelchy in parts. I passed what looked like a plantiecrub which had nothing but weeds in it! On up to the top and the ground became more rocky with dark honey-coloured boulders on the ground. The pillar stands less than 5 metres from the edge of the cliff. FB faces W; N sighthole open, all others plugged; metal cap with heavy embossed letters. A great outlook inland and over towards Balta island in the south, although the view of Balta is even better from about 100m south of the pillar. 9.3m north of the pillar is a slight dip in the ground corresponding with the 'Old Trig' in the OS database.

A fine windy day with sun off and on. Steady walk up starting from the quarry where talc? was being dug out. Good firm turf underfoot - unusual for Shetland.

After visiting Libbers Hill trig pillar and Herma Ness earlier in the day I checked into the Sergeant’s Mess Bunkhouse in Haroldswick, before heading up here. I started out from the corner of the road by the church and needed to climb over quite a few barbed wire fences on my way. I imagine that visiting the trig as part of a coastal walk would take away this little inconvenience. The view up and down the eastern coast of Unst was excellent and it made a great ending to a day that I been looking forward to for a very long time.

Pleasant stroll up undemanding but interesting terrain. Bonxie's (Great Skua) objected to my presence and I was subjected to frequent aerial attack’s. Views of coastline worth the walk.
