2nd of the 8 I have left on Islay. Known locally as the fairy hill and to be spotted for miles around. Great sea views. Parked at NR 43399 47986 and headed through gate to reservoir, then picked up various paths in the direction of the trig point, very muddy at first. On the way back found a track that led me all the way to the road at Dower House and avoided the muddy bit.

Overall approach from the south. Public roadside parking for two cars outside The Dower House. Across the road, a path leads through the undergrowth which passes a memorial and continues to the top. The pillar is in good condition with minor grass clearance needed to photograph the flush bracket. Spider retains original centre cap with large narrow raised letters. The flush bracket faces northwest, compass measurement 302°. Pillar vented through back sight hole. Intermittent views of the bay below when the fog lifted.

Known locally as the Fairy Hill (looked, but didn't see any). Parked opposite house 'Tigh Rhaonastil' (benchmarked, but missed it), short walk NE to field gate, then up through fern & bramble covered lower slopes and then steep low-treed forest to break out onto magical (fairy?) hill top. Pillar in good condition; original cap in place, raised lettering; front sight hole undetermined, others closed. Extensive 360deg views, especially along SW coast and to inland mountainous areas.

Visible from road beyond Ardbeg distillery, which is well worth a visit (along with Laphroig, the friendliest on Islay, and Lagavulin).

What looked on the map like an easy climb, in fact turned out to be quite a trek through chest height bracken. However, the view from the top was worth it.
