The pillar stands next to a forestry track on the edge of woodland next to a housing estate on a hill to the north of Lydney in the Forest of Dean. Two thirds of the top surface of the pillar is missing, exposing a large part of the spider. It has a metal cap with deep lettering and has FB S6770. The nearby trees and houses prevent a view from the site. A small part of the Cotswold Edge can be seen in the distance to the east. The nearby forest provided a pleasant short walk through mixed woodland. There was an impressive display of fox gloves in places. The path to the east of Danby Lodge offers a brief but pretty view down a wooded valley to the River Severn and the Cotswold Edge.
