Part of a morning circular walk. Visited Grit Trix and then cut back through the valley and up to this trigpoint. My arrival here coincided with the heaviest rain of the day, but I did have a view.

A 'bag' of both the Colsterdale Moor & Witton Fell trigs was always going to be a tough 'en from Caldbergh...Parking for a coupl'a cars at GR 093 852...Took the Caldbergh Hall track SE to take a left to Castle Steads Fort taking a right then left to follow the wall to Crundell Hill. Going thro' the gate in the wall walked over Crundell Hill to the wall at its end, descending along it. 'Heading' uphill & across the moors, eventually climbed a gate at GR 123 847 & took a left along the fence line into the fence corner. Climbing another gate a short way along the Western edge of Witton plantation, followed a track upwards about GR 130 850 which, 'swinging' round to the left, took me via Etrex numbers to the somewhat hidden trig. Descending from the trig, 'picked-up' the forest track again but this time continued south to exit the plantation & proceed as the 'crow flies' across rough moorland to the Colsterdale Moor trig. En-route Lobley Crags were descended & post a rough encounter with chest high fern a steep descent & re-ascent thro' the wooded areas of a river valley, with an easy river crossing needed negotiation. Post visit to the trig, an as the 'crow flies, descent was made, the Red Way back to Caldbergh being 'picked-up' at the wall GR 098 8395...20,691 steps, 9.9 miles taking 4.25 hours! This was my last Yorkshire trig having completed them all bar one on the two maps...The one that 'got away' was Feldom Rigg Sunday gone consequence of a red flag day & obviously a re-visit just to get one, assuming of course it was 'gettable', just couldn't be justified from Manchester!

Colsterdale Moor S7710 from GR: SE 12902 81311. The latest OS mapping 2023 now has a Bridleway marked from SE 12888 81298 up through three fields and onto the Open Access Land. The bottom field has difficult gorse blocking the route and fences to climb over so hardly a bridgeway route. For bikes and horses the actual line to use is via a gate at SE 12935 81337 then to the wall and crossing the wall west in the top field as the exit gate onto open access land is the west side of the wall.

To the west some interesting flat top hills. A fracture encircles 3 sides of this pillar in lower half. Calcite or grouting around the flush bracket. Spider top intact. Feeder tray on the top.

An 8 mile circular from Gollinglith Foot, along the Coal Rd to the Shooting House and tracks across the moor towards the trig , then the fun began with a session of heather bashing to the trig , which is in good condition with areas of white cracking around the FB, a Grit tray was positioned on top of the Trig, continued with a further session of heather and for extra enjoyment Braken Bashing to cross Birk Gill by the Boundary stones and followed the path along Long side back to the road.

A fairly isolated trig which involved a long and largely bracken infested walk along the narrow path to the north side of Birk Gill from the parking area on the narrow road going up Colsterdale. I came back down the south side of the gill which in its lower reaches is very deep so best keeping to its top edge. Trig is in good condition with original plug which features indented lettering. The stone circle surrounding the Trig has even been painted at some point and the heather around the Trig has been mown/burnt. It was starting to rain heavily when I got there and I was fairly wet when I got back to the car.

Route to trig from south via access land was ok, took northern route off, but tough going in heather and long bracken, hard to cross Birk Gill ravine to reach path.
