Good parking on verge of lane off main road. Farm track then gate on LHS. A great grassy tumulus with trig point and excellent views. Bright sunshine, cloudless skies and windy.

At top of a bell barrow, one of only 7 in Somerset - a scheduled monument (so no digging!). Parked at field gate a little to the N, along track then between 2 covered reservoirs. Pillar found vgc; original cap in place, lightly indented lettering; LHD side sight hole open. An extensive 360deg panorama.

The pillar is perched on a grassy beacon mound, on a summit, on the edge of the Blackdown Hills, to the north-west of Chard. It has FB S3741 and the spider is plugged by a metal cap with very shallow lettering. I parked at the top of Cut Tongue Lane. The field containing the beacon passes between two covered reservoirs and is easily entered from the adjacent track. The trig has a massive view to the north across the levels to the Mendip Hills in the distance. The view in other directions is partly restricted but some wooded hills and valleys of West Dorset and East Devon could be seen to the south and west. A Bronze Age bell barrow is buried under the mound and the site is designated a Scheduled Monument.

My first go at this. Came on a Geocaching trip today. The view from here was stunning, but then I guess as they're all at the top of hills they should all be good??? Or will I learn different as I go on. Thank you for another interest while walking in the countryside. xx

I\'m not very tall.
