These were not the right conditions to do the Great Round of Coniston (Birketts) and ended up retreating down the Carrs (visited the remains of the Halifax Bomber LL 505) and dropping into Little Langdale via Rough Crags and Greenburn Beck. The scantily clad youngsters provided great entertainment ascending to the the pillar. On my own in rain, gusty winds and clag until Little Langdale. I am gifting the Old Man to dungarees and turned up jeans, which have come around for the umpteenth time in the fashion circle.

What an oversight of what was a great achievement of mine as I had driven up from home in Devon and booked in to the excellent Coppermines Youth Hostel, and then on my own set off to get to the top of Coniston Old Man on my very first visit to the Lake District several years ago [sorry cannot remember when]. It was a glorious day and several people were about aiming in the same direction so navigation wasnt a problem. The trig point as far as I can remember was fine...and I can remember meeting a man there who pointed out that we could see Blackpool from there! I was so enjoying myself that I forgot to take a photo of the trig point, but did take one of the nearby shelter which I am not used to seeing on the heights of Dartmoor Tors back at home!

Approached from west via Seathwaite Tarn. Visited to record FB number. The pillar was completed in June 1949 costing £31.2s.0d. In 1950 this marker was computed as secondary station SD47/11 in the Barrow-in-Furness block. Flush bracket S5473 was levelled for height also in 1950. This trig point was last maintained by the OS in August 1977. Pillar is built with local stone. The spider centre is plugged with the usual coarse substance suggesting that the original OSTS lettered cap is long gone. The pillar photograph was taken by my mother while I stood at the pillar. Bagged and photographed 9/09/1990, GRP.
