Lawnmower racing in Tilshead this weekend so took the dog for a trot up to this one via the Imber Range Perimeter path. Not the most exciting views, but always interesting to be on the plain. Got a little lost on the way back, spotted by an army land rover who just waved!

About two and a half miles north west of Shrewton on the A360, about four hundred metres past a barn on the west side of the road, down a dip is a track onto military land. Rough gravel surface but ok for driving on, slowly. Just after a mile or so reaches a junction of tracks. Straight on, almost, about twenty five metres past the junction after clearing the trees, pillar comes into view to south of track. Fifty metres away. Heathland views, misty, frosty morning so slightly limited. No cap.

A pleasant trig surrounded by wildflowers on my visit. Only a very short distance off the track, not in a restricted area with no fences or gates to hop making this one a trivial bag. Some rope tied across the loops on top of the pillar. Although a nice spot, the views are fairly unexciting.

Once past Chitterne and onto smaller road i felt a lot better. The last bit to get to this Trig was along tank roads. One army land rover went past me but I had no trouble getting to the trig. Found a huge knife and a form with coords on it near it. Quite flat around here so not great views.

Approached this one from Tilshead village on mostly wide tracks to easily find the pillar set on the grassy plain. On return, visited the White Barrow Long Barrow. On way here I'd visited Maddington Church where a bagpipe player was playing beautifully in the garden of the Old Vicarage (for a moment I thought I was back in Scotland!) Fine pibroch conversation ensued when I returned the church keys. An unexpected musical morning.

Birthday trig on a lovely sunny evening after a very wet visit to Stonehenge. Intended to visit the Knighton Down pillar, but red flags flying so thanks to Jonglew for noting that this pillar is outside the firing ranges. Drove to it - in via BOAT from N which is easily passible in a 4WD. 'Got lost' on the way out and took one of the better tracks back to the E. Passed by a military land rover who wasn't remotely bothered by us. Very flat, so far reaching views of very little. All except N s/hole open, as is centre, but otherwise vgc.

The pillar has no plug and has FB S1939; it was accessed by foot, passing a sizeable long barrow, using byways from the main road. The pillar is positioned on a grassy plateau within the Salisbury Plain SSSI. The site has restricted views due to nearby plantations. The grassy down above Westwood Camp is seen to the northeast; to the west lie some houses, possibly military, inside some woodland with the downs beyond. Low flying army helicopters were in action to the south.
