Same route as 'beckroad'. First of the day, very quite and peaceful.

My second visit, same route as before from cattle grid to N of TP. Not as easy as I claimed it was in 2017 (but then I'm not as fit as I was then), it's a bit of a tussocky slog in places. The views of the vast, empty Otterburn Ranges are good, but between The Cheviots, Thirl Moor and Simonside to the S it does feel a little bit 'in a bowl'. That said, there are a lot of worse places to be on sunny afternoon.

Parked at a bend in the tarmac road and followed a quad bike track to the rocky outcrop. Spider still intact. Soaked in the views due to fantastic weather conditions. Twittering birds and the remote location make this a fantastic trig to visit.

Permissive path from Tofthouse Road, returning directly east to make a circular walk. Nice sunny, warm afternoon with good visibility.

Parked by the cattle grid north of the TP on the road that passes Ridlees Cairn. Although the moorland to the TP looks rough going there are a couple of ATV tracks that will lead you easily to the TP, however a pig wire / barbed wire fence has to be negotiated. If you walk till you are level east of the TP or south of it the fence becomes pig wire only and is so slack it is very easily crossed to reach the TP. Extensive views in a wild and lonely spot, we had just the skylarks for company.

Overnight rain combined with knee-high vegetation meant that I ended up getting soaked and having to cope with saturated boots for the rest of the day. Parked by the observation hut at Cocklaw Green and followed the PROW east then forestry road. Stick to the northern most track and eventually you'll come to a footpath post. Follow this via a tree break to the northern edge of the plantation then 500 m or so wet tussocky slog to the pillar.

Bagged with Phil Cooper after Thirl Moor and Ridlees Cairn on a non firing day. Roads closed tomorrow for the Keith Knox Cheviot Rally - so that's another thing to look out for which might affect access to this military area. We joined the rally cars in their route before branching off to bag Crigdon Hill and the tank graveyard.

Parked on the army road 2km east of the trig, then walked in via the footpath, forest track, and permissive footpath to forest edge. Then last 500m across wet moorland. A non-firing day, of course. Rather remote & bleak, but impressively empty views across the Otterburn ranges.
