Very short cycle along A303 before going up Farmers track and then BW. This trig is behind bars! and has chain coming from its top. FB is photo-able through bars that protect the antenna relay building thingy. I was disturbed by woman who was on a horse. I think she thought I was looking for a quiet place to have a pee not the Trig.

Walked up from the Upton Lovell road and then through a beautifully tree-shaded footpath, for it was very hot today in the middle of Wiltshire, to find this captive pillar within its cage. An impregnable encasement here; it does seem to be a little over the top.

Parked in Corton and took Wessex Ridgeway up to the trig. Pillar is located inside a Wessex Water compound - with 12ft high security fencing ensuring we cannot contaminate the water supply! But more importantly ensuring we cannot get up close and personal with the trig. No matter, a camera can be put through the bars for a good shot. Pillar looks to be in good condition; sight hole beneath FB is closed, others are indetermined; cap missing, no plug. All round views, S to woodland, N E & W to rolling Wiltshire downland, southern escarpment of Salisbury Plain clearly visible to N.

This was the last T/P of the first day of my expedition into the south west of England. There were many routes in to this one but I chose to park at the start of the bridleway just south east of Boyton and by virtue of some really sloppy map reading, I’d “inadvertently” found myself on a farm road rather than the aforementioned bridleway. The upside was that the route was slightly shorter and the gradient was a lot gentler. I was also heading straight for the T/P. I managed to find the public RoW again at North Soupir and then follow the road north west to the pillar, cutting the corner off by going through a gate and following the field boundary. The pillar was easily found behind a rather large water tank, which also served as a welcome shelter from the rain that had been falling steadily. Apart from a missing plug, the pillar is in good condition. The views are the usual farmland with the western aspect blocked by the water tank. As everywhere was very wet, the snails were out on force.... and they are HUGE.
