Parked near to T junction to south of Upton Lovell near to start of footpath heading south uphill onto Down. Deeply rutted path more like a dry riverbed, a couple of fallen trees lying across the path. After about a kilometre, path levels out, passes a pig farm and crosses The Ridgeway. Continuing south and gaining a little more height a barn comes into view on the west of the path and a compound on the east side. Looking a bit ominous as there is tall metal fencing around it. Sure enough, pillar is inside the fenced reservoir compound in the north east corner. Well and truly captive. Fortunately the FB faces east and is close enough to get decent photograph. When the fence was put up why not put it a few metres further south to leave the pillar accessible. Cap missing. Views to east outside compound. Not much to be gained from getting inside the compound. Close enough from the outside. A bit disappointing nonetheless. Would need a key for the gate. Reading other logs looks like fencing erected around 2010.

This was the last T/P of the first day of my expedition into the south west of England. There were many routes in to this one but I chose to park at the start of the bridleway just south east of Boyton and by virtue of some really sloppy map reading, I’d “inadvertently” found myself on a farm road rather than the aforementioned bridleway. The upside was that the route was slightly shorter and the gradient was a lot gentler. I was also heading straight for the T/P. I managed to find the public RoW again at North Soupir and then follow the road north west to the pillar, cutting the corner off by going through a gate and following the field boundary. The pillar was easily found behind a rather large water tank, which also served as a welcome shelter from the rain that had been falling steadily. Apart from a missing plug, the pillar is in good condition. The views are the usual farmland with the western aspect blocked by the water tank. As everywhere was very wet, the snails were out on force.... and they are HUGE.
