(344) I set out from Beckermonds on a breezy, overcast day on a long undulating loop to bag Low Green Field Lings, Cave Hill and Cosh Outside. After the excellent first couple of pillars, I had high hopes for Cosh - a deserted, rarely-walked fell, with views over to Pen y ghent and Plover Hill? Right up my street. It was not to be, however. The weather came crashing in as I left the Pennine Way at Cave Hill, and headed up the open fellside. The lack of tracks, trods or any useable line through the tussocky grass and bog didn't help, and after two uphill miles of that in the middle of thrashing rain, thick hill fog and cold wind I'd had enough. I reached Cosh Knott Well and had a look at the oversized trig-a-like cairn before climbing the final false summit to make the pillar. There were no views to speak of, so little reward for my efforts - and the following miles back to the car were even worse, with ankle-snapping pathless bog all the way to the Robin Hood's Well junction. The pillar has a full set of metalwork and a faded white coat, but it is damaged with some significant cracking and mortar repairs. Firmly on my 'not going back in a hurry' list.

Did this trig with longtime friend George who was the vet for this area 40 years ago (and yes he did meet Alf Wight, the real James Herriot.) Walked from the picturesque hamlet of Foxup up the track to one of the most isolated settlements in the Yorkshire Dales - Cosh House. From there we carried on to reach the pillar and the stone man on Cosh Knott as swirling low cloud and showers spoiled the best long distance views. Then we headed south, following a wall until we reached the bridleway at Swarth Gill Gate. That turned out to be a really good path back to Foxup to make an excellent round trip.

Then on down to Horton in Ribblesdale passing Hull Pot, a couple of pints of Cider & a 12yr old Aberlour whisky at The Crown went down well before the 16.20 train back to Skipton.

This station was last maintained by the OS on 30th November 1994. SITE VISIT: Three trig circuit starting and finishing near High Green Field. There is no suitable parking offered any further up this public road, and doing so will result in a politely worded note attached to windscreen. Followed road and bridleway to access land at SD817777, then east to ridge of hill and NE to summit. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains OS centre cap with shallow engraved letters. Flush bracket faces NNW, ~331°. Vented through SE sight hole. Full 360° panoramic view. Continued to Cave Hill, and Low Green Field Lings. Climbing up the path onto Old Cote Moor before following the ridge wall all the way round passing over Birks Fell for my friends last English Nuttall and visiting the pillar at Horse Head and collecting another seven caches along the way. From the pillar we dropped down to cross the wire fence then slanted east on a faint tractor track to the gate in the wall to the start of the track that took us through the house at Cosh and on to Foxup. After which it was a delightful walk through the hay meadows back to Litton. As for the pillar itself it is in excellent condition, sheep rubbed and still retains an original plug. easy but takes a long time... you can easily follow the track from foxup all the way up to cosh farm( deserted when i was there, but had cacti in the windows- must be a summer sheiling!)from there continue up the shallow valley until you meet a wall crossing your way, at a severely waterlogged gate. now it's uphill and left at the top. I didn't test the electric fence even though it has no warnings on it -it LOOKS electric!. The extra old cairn is a fine thing- since going up here, I've noticed how prominent it is from around horton in ribblesdale

Excellent views today with good visibility across the surrounding area. Came up from Horton along Foxup Road following a faint path/track running adjacent the fence/broken wall - we turned left immediateley before the stone footbridge over the (usually) dry stream at Swarth Gill Gate and kept the wall/fence on our right, when we reached the crest of the hill we turned right (unless visibilities poor you'll see the trig way before you reach the crest). Strangely the area around the trig has an 'electric fence' around it (at this area it did have notices - unlike stonestreakers later posting) - god knows why - the 'electric fence' don't work - well at least it didn't today as I can testify by virtue of grabbing the bloody thing with zilch of an effect - and slightly to the west of the trig is a broken wall where it's a simple job to straddle the fence anyway. There's a tall stone pillar a couple of hundred yards to the west of the trig that's worth a visit (near Cosh Knott Well) - strangely not shown on the 2002 map, does anyone know why the stone pillar is there ?
