I was staying at the Moira Furnace Folk Festival with Christine for the weekend. While she was enjoying the singing, noise and general hub-bub, I needed a little solitude so I decided to walk up to this pillar. A fairly easy route west following the available footpaths to Overseal, then the footpath southwest to the top end of Gunby Lea. About 400 yards of country lane then the footpath northwest beside Grange Wood and Potter’s Wood to the pillar. I walked through acres of newly planted trees that will, in someone else’s lifetime be the new ‘National Forest’. Long may it survive! The pillar is overshadowed by a large tree and a communication mast in an open area of grassland. It is in good condition and has its complete set of metalwork intact. The view south towards Tamworth is arguably the best aspect. A very pleasant walk of around 7.5 miles.

Left my bike at the Beehive Café and walked up to Park Farm – Trigpoint sheltered by a big tree – views being obstructed by new forestry. Can’t understand why it’s called Coton Park – the area I would call Coton Park is miles away. Visited again on 1st Dec 2010 to get a photo in the snow – walked from home – had great fun on the way back – an articulated lorry had followed his satnav down some narrow icy lanes and had got stuck in a ditch – I waited with the driver till the wrecking truck came – got some photos of the performance and a lift back home in the truck.
