Parking Godmanstone, just off A352. RoW mostly then into arable field to access trig from W side of hedgerow. Hedgerow recently cut back so pillar clear but tight against wire fencing. Minor chipping to one top corner otherwise good; original cap in place, indented lettering; LHD side sight hole open. Views W & SW to Hardy Monument.

The pillar is situated by the side of a field of yellow rape next to a hedge of flowering hawthorn; a bridleway lies on the other side of the hedge. It has a metal cap with shallow lettering and FB S5944. I walked up from Godmanstone by means of the bridleway from Manor Farm. Climbing the hill there is a good view looking back to Cowdon and East Hill on the other side of the valley. On reaching the top a pleasant view opens out to the west over the more open landscape of Crete and Pond Bottom. Pink campion and bluebells lined the verges of the ridge top bridleway; in places tortoiseshell, brimstone, orange-tip and white butterflies were flitting around the hedgerows, as were various small birds. The view from the pillar is restricted by nearby hedgerows. To the west are the tops of Magiston and Hog Cliff Hills; the Buckland Hill transmitter can be seen along the ridge to the north and the Hardy Monument on a distant hill in the south. From the fields on the other side of the bridleway the view goes down the Cerne Valley to Charlton Down and a number of hazy ridges in the distance. There is a surviving cut bench mark on an old gatepost near Watcombe Farm. Unfortunately the Smiths Arms was closed.

Decided to look for my first trig today, on the way up Crete Hill, having seen it on the map. And it had to be near invisible! ROW had hedge on both sides, I walked past trig and eventually found it on the other side of the hedge - actually, in the hedge but only visible from one side. If they are all going to be this hard to find, it should be interesting! Sox the dog and I had a very warm walk and found another trig before we retired for the night.
