Revisit to the spot for this trig, recently discovered in the OS archives and a one-time contender to be part of the Passive network, but almost certainly replaced by the nearby Berntsen. Water meter clearly not OS related and just a distraction for bored baggers that can't find the trig!

Work has recently been carried out here and it looks as if the old water meter cover has been replaced by a new plastic one

Found water meter still covered by the two rocks. Photographed it and then put the rocks back. Safe to say that the surface block was destroyed and replaced by the Berntsen, which is only around a foot to the south of the water meter. The location is very close to Riber Castle, built by the industrialist John Smedley in 1862. Smedley's coachman at Riber Castle was George Marchant, who lived at Hartley House, 6 Steep Turnpike, Matlock. Marchant used his house as a boarding house. On the 4th March 1883, the father of Margaret Rutherford (the actress who played Miss Marple in 4 films), William Rutherford Benn, who suffered from severe bouts of depression and mental illness, murdered his father, the Reverend Julius Benn, at Hartley House whilst boarding there. Riber Castle has been a ruin for many years, but is currently being converted into apartments

(1990) A short distance from the berntsen. Water meter covered by two rocks. The lid came up easily, so able to have a look inside. The block was replaced by TP0607, it's safe to assume, and the location was later used by Severn Trent Water for the meter,

Ted's chamber holds a water meter, lettering on lid is STW (=Severn Trent Water), B.B. (= ??). 1.4m due N of the Berntsen, has evidently replaced the Passive.

Passive station Riber C1SK3158 Location given as: Eastings: 431096.746 m Northings: 358850.684 m Height: 226.302 m Comparing this to the nearby Berntsen: Eastings: 431096.749 Northings: 358849.283 Height 226.318 Riber should therefore be 0.3 cm West, 1.401 metres North of the Berntsen. At the anticipated location, a metal cover was readily identified and unearthed. Labelled 'BB' which probably does not denote a Buried Block :) Unable to open the lid with my screwdriver and trowel and, although it seems unlikely to be trig related, it would be interesting to know what lies below. Probed the surrounding area for 30 mins; unearthed several blocks of stone - likely to have once been part of the wall. Various other smaller stones but no concrete. Seems likely that C1SK3158 has been replaced by the higher-order Berntsen. The benchmarks database has bm114683: "OSBM Bolt: Riber CUT MARK: (NOT FOR PUBLIC USE YET!) NBM C1/SK3158 RIBER 0.78M E SIDE RD 1.8M W OF NW CNR TROUGH (ODN 226.3204m, AGL 0.0m). Grid reference: SK 3110 5884." Unclear if this is the same item as C1SK3158
