From the barn at the end of the Baverstock road (a particularly unpleasant drive with the recent floods and freeze), a decent walk up the byway led to an opening into the trig field, where the pillar enjoys a reasonable view. And yes, I took a selfie at the pillar whilst crouching down!

Parked in Barford St Martin near top of lane where bridleway starts and heads north west. Fairly narrow between hedges with a fairly gentle climb, after about six hundred metres path levels then descends slightly where it meets another footpath coming from the east. Continue west, uphill, a little more steeply. Where path meets woods on north side and field to south, pillar is about a hundred metres into the middle of the field. Across frozen ground using tyre tracks as much as possible. Good views to south. Frost hanging on even at 10.30 on a sunny day.

Couldn't see this pillar from the footpath because of the growing oil seed rape, but for once my instinctive sense of direction led me straight to it. The nearby Grovely Wood had today a magnificent display of flowers including: wood sorrel, bluebell, primrose, celandine, common dog-violet, dandelion, and wood spurge. Could hear plenty of woodpeckers, but not that elusive cuckoo.

Bagged on a 10 mile circular walk from Barford St Martin through Grovely Woods to pick up this, Grovely Castle & Grovely Hill trigs. The trig is in an arable field approx 60m in from the field boundary. Planted with rape seed oil at the moment, the plants are smaller than they should be this time of the year and it was easy to pick a way through without damaging the crop. Pillar is in good condition with original cap in place; 2 sight holes open. Extensive views W, also S to Compton Down; views E and N obscured, or partially so, by woods.

The pillar is in a large arable field with no crop; it has a metal cap with shallow lettering and FB S2204. Poor visibility restricted the views today. Grovely Woods are nearby to the north; the downland spur the other side of Barford can just be seen over the hedge to the east; on the other side of the valley the outline of Compton Down could be made out beyond the low wooded rise of Hurdcott to the south; to the west the large fields of the side of the Nadder Valley disappear into the mist.

Saginanivalis, thankfully, you're proved wrong. From Grovely Hill we dropped down onto the Ox Drove and headed west. This is a very pleasant track, undulating up and down with the contours, and although open to all traffic we only saw a couple of horses and one Landrover. Unlike the droves further south around Broad Chalke which are in poor condition and full of idiots driving 4X4s. Crouch Down trig is where it should be, and just visible from the track now that the wheat has been harvested. Plug with indented lettering. This was our third trig of a very pleasant 10 mile circular walk. Time to retire now to the 'Guide Dog' in Southampton (Regional CAMRA Pub of the Year) for an excellent pint of Guinness.
