Lucky to get access. They were just letting people in for the last open day of the year. I asked the Manager if I could just Log the Trig Pillar and he kindly escorted me to it and gave me some history of the fort. I will make a donation online and will return to visit on an open day next year as it looks amazing inside.

Fort owned by Landmark Trust, accessed on an open day - 3 this year, although seems access isn't difficult as there are paying guests so place is open most of the time. Pillar atop a gun emplacements on W side of fort. Retains original top cap, lightly indented lettering; 'BSM' style FB; rear sight hole open, LHS plug degrading. Trees recently cut back so good views over the city. Cut benchmark at entrance to fort.

An interesting pillar simply because of its surroundings, in a museum! The Fort was officially closed to the public when I arrived, but the gates were open so I just went to look for someone to ask permission. I quickly found her and as soon as I explained that what I wanted to do was akin to train spotting she smiled and said "Let yourself out when you're done"!

I visited on a day when the fort should have been open, but was not. However, I was able to walk in and find the manager who apologised for having to limit opening to special events only, despite having published information otherwise. Preparation for an event was in progress and the manager gave me permission to visit the pillar. Future visitors should check www.crownhillfort.co.uk for opening times, expected to be updated in October. This is the nearest existing pillar to my childhood home. GR to 10m only.

TP2639 Walk up the grass ramp from the parade ground and head back towards the gate to spot the pillar.
