After visiting the popular Strand tea room in Culmstock headed north on B3391 for about a mile then turned east along narrow badly potholed lane until dead end at start of footpath up onto Beacon. Parking area quite stony and uneven. Footpath heads east but there are a couple of worn paths through the dead ferns to take a more southerly and steeper route. Made it to high ground which levels out, headed in south west direction and spotted pillar. It is next to a beacon hut which is quite old. Part of a warning system of beacons dating from Elizabethan times. The pillar has information plaques on each side. Extra point for interesting information. Cap missing. Great views to south and west. Couple of other walkers about taking advantage of sunny weather.

Driving N on M5 and saw overhead signs saying 1hr delays ahead. Google traffic showed M5 blocked at Bridgewater. So got off at J27 and drove into Culmstock for a leg stretch up lanes and FP to Beacon. Cracking spot, lots of local history and superb views on a sunny dasy. By the time I got back to the M5, it was free flowing-a lesson learned.

The warmest February day on record seemed the ideal opportunity to get a few more 2019 trig points under my belt, and I started with a belter. I parked just short of Purchas Farm and branched off the marked track to follow a short, steep route to the ridge which was bathed in sunshine. The views were stupendous, if a little hazy at that time in the morning. The first of five today.

Decided to start my geocaching trip with this YSM/TP and struggled up the slippery path in the rain up to the top! What a delight this was however, and by far my favourite trig point! Fascinating beacon building nearby, and the trig point itself has 4 plaques explaining the beacon and trig pointing. There may be some who don't agree with the fixing of information plaques on the trig but I found them fascinating and informative hence my rating of 10/10! There was however little view on such a misty miserable day, but I bet it is worth seeing on a lovely day!
