Walked out the track before heading out over the wet hill. Saw a Scootie Aalan (Artic Skua ) and a hare on the way up. Quite breezy at the summit, had to put a fleece back on, but sweltering when in the shelter of the wind. Could just see the broch from the pillar.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 30th September 1959 costing 55.3s.8d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station HU46/T32 in 1961. Levelled for height also in 1961. Last maintained by the OS in June 1980. SITE VISIT: Approached from SSE. Parked, west side of unclassified road just south of lane at HU272449. Walked lane to just before chapel. Chapel used for regular worship. Up unmapped track just west of chapel for ~150m then beeline NNW across open moor to top. Ward of Culswick. A smooth plateau of shallow heather and occasional boulders makes for easy walking. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains OS centre cap with raised large narrow letters. Flush bracket faces NNE, ~25. Vented through SE sight hole. Full 360 panoramic view.

Metal cap, wide raised letters. Summit area has 3 cairns, one on a large boulder which is the high point. Good views of whimbrel on ascent, one chasing off a four times the size herring gull!

A relatively easy walk from the road at Culswick past the Methodist Chapel and out onto the peaty moorland. The pillar sits surrounded by a circular arrangement of stones in the ground. FB faces N; all sightholes plugged; metal cap with raised letters. A superb view of Foula from here bathed in the low sunlight, and great views of other areas including Ronas Hill to the north. A really nice way to round off the day! The 'benchmark' that martine41 describes (and which I didn't notice at the time) could be a genuine triangulation mark which predates the pillar, however it does not appear in the OS trig or benchmark databases (see similar confirmed mark at nearby Shoostran (TP5957)). I suspect therefore that it was likely moved when the pillar was constructed (it appears slightly incongruous in the context of the circle of stones) and has assumed a new role as a witness mark for the pillar.

A second visit to this trig point and remembered my camera this time. One photograph shows a detail of one of the the stones that surround the trig in a circular pattern - there seems to be an arrow shape. A bench mark?

Walked up from the road leading to the church then followed a track that ran behind it for a short distance before heading NE for the trig. Two hares, one cream white and the other more blue/grey white on the route. Clear visibility and the ground underfoot very good for the time of year.

Parked at Methodist church and walked a short way along track before striking off right up hill. Easy walk to the top which is barren peat with a few large rocks . Carried on down and around Vivilie Loch to coast and then westwards to Culswick Broch, well worth the detour. Completed walk by track back to church.
